Chapter Six Ryan woke up fast, his arm reaching across the empty expanse of bed. His heartbeat was so loud in his ears he almost didn’t hear the toilet flushing in the bathroom. As soon as he realized what it was, he collapsed back onto the bed, releasing a gush of air. He rolled to his side, his back to the doorway so that he’d have a little more time to compose himself. He tracked the sounds as she used the sink, opened the door and padded across the plush carpet. The bed dipped behind him but he didn’t move.
