I’m not sure how long I had been out but I can start to feel my toes again as I fight my way out of the darkness. My eyelids are heavy and I struggle to open them, but I am awake and I try to move my arms, legs, and fingers, desperate for my body to get the message.
“What is wrong with her?” I hear an older mans voice, but it’s not familiar and I realise it must be Benecke. He sounds angry. “We had a deal, you know what is owed!” Benecke’s voice is now clear as day and I keep my eyes shut by choice, curious and unsure about what they are discussing.
“Nothing! No- Nothing!” I can hear Lia scramble. “She’s just a bit tired. She hasn’t been sleeping much and um, she was very nervous to meet your son.” I wondered if it was just one explanation too many to be convincing and decided I’d better fake a sluggish wake up soon until, suddenly, I am frozen with fear as a cold hand trails along my cheek bone and my eyes open to find Cullen leaning uncomfortably close to me. “You look beautiful lying there baby, but ears dropping is a nasty little habit.” His expression turns from sweet to stone cold as both his hands wrap around my face and he pulls me so close to him that our noses are almost touching. He holds me there, lingering uncomfortably that I wonder if he is going to kiss me but before the intensity becomes too much and I start to lean away from him, he redirects my head to the side and strokes his lips down my neck. It is an odd sensation but I can’t deny the sudden drop of my stomach as my heart begins to thud faster and faster. I close my eyes involuntarily as a small moan comes from my throat and in the next moment I feel him wrap around me and pull me to my feet. What the hell was that?!
I can still hear Benecke and Lia arguing in the kitchen and Callen pulls on my hand to follow him. I assumed we would be heading towards the others but instead he detours and we head up the stairs. Hmmm I doubt when Lia asked me to clean my room for the guests, this is what she had in mind.
“Umm Callen..” I started, I mean, I knew the where but I wasn’t quite sure on the why. “What are we doing here?” I asked as we stopped at the door to my bedroom. He looked at me confused, but quickly straightened his glance and pushed through the threshold. “We are packing your belongings, of course.” He stated like it was common knowledge and looked at me confused again as I stared back at him, equally confused. I stood there for a moment, in shock, as he glided around my room in a very unnatural way, grabbing a few bags from under my bed and now heading for my wardrobe. I finally closed my mouth that I didn’t know was open and cleared my throat as I watched him toss my favourite pair of jeans in one of the bags. “Okay, what the HELL is going on?!” I scream at him as I walk over to my bag and start unpacking what he had just packed. “Just stop. Just stop! I need some sort of explanation right now Callen!” He slowed a little as I spoke his name but continued to gather my things. “I am not going anywhere, I mean what is this? Are you and your Dad from some kind of facility for troubled teens?” He looked over his shoulder at me and laughed, “No Rylee. Should we be?” He smirked at me as he held up a piece of jewellery in each hand, gesturing me to choose which one I wanted. I rolled my eyes at him and pointed to the small silver necklace with a mermaid on it in his left hand. He raised an eyebrow at me but none the less, tossed it into my bag also. It probably looked like a little girls souvenir from a candy store but he couldn’t know how much that necklace meant to me. It was the only thing I had left from my birth mother and the fact that he had tossed it so carelessly made me stomp over to the bag like a toddler having a tantrum, grab it out and wrap it around my neck. I can imagine how silly it must look against my outfit but I don’t care. Who the hell does this guy think he is? I keep up the charade as I cross my arms and move in front of my bag to stop his direct line of ‘packing.’ “Answers. Now!” I huff at him and suddenly, he is right beside me and I feel uneasy at the way he moves, so unnaturally. His lips graze my ear as he whispers, “You are mine, Rylee.” His lips continue to nip along my ear and down to my neck as he speaks, “We are packing your things because you are coming to live with me.”
“Wh-what?” It was all I could manage as I begin to feel my knees buckle and my toddler stance falter. I drop, thankful for the bed below me.
“Do you really not know? Have you not be preparing for this your whole life?” Callens look of confusion returns and now I think I understand the reason for it. He expected me to know what was going on. He was confused that I had not been told previous to his arrival. Well so am I! How the hell could Lia and Matt not tell me I was about to be practically kidnapping by some strange guy and his dad?! That was valuable information for goodness sake! I feel something nagging at the back of my mind and slowly close my eyes to concentrate on my breathing.
“Callen, I am 15. I don’t know who you think you are telling me I am yours but I am not coming to live with you or your freaky Dad! I have no idea what is going on here but if you’ll excuse me, I need to go and speak to my mother.” I spit the last word in anger, collect myself and head downstairs.
“Lia! What the hell is going on?” I yell at the top of my lungs before I even get into the kitchen so that they can all hear me coming. When I finally reach them I can see Lia giving Benecke a shy smile, she shrugs and offers him a quick, “teenagers.” I hadn’t called her Lia on purpose but it had the desired effect. She was trying to hide her distain at me as her eyes flick down to my mermaid necklace. “Are you all set sweetie?” What?!
“Well that depends..” I reply, pretending to be thinking as I tap my chin, “No! I’m not all set because I had no idea I would be shipped off with a couple of strangers today! I throw my hands up in the air in a dramatic fashion. Lia looks up at me and for the first time I think she looks almost, apologetic, “I’m sorry Rylee, we wanted to tell you but we were afraid you would try to run away. You aren’t exactly the most.. obedient child.”
“Well you guessed it Mum because I am not going! This is madness! You are all clinically insane and I hope, for your sake, that you all get the proper help you need but in the mean time, I’ll be in my room!” I turn on my heels as I attempt to leave but instead of walking through a doorway I feel like I’ve walked into a wall. I look up and see Callen standing there, his face hard. His eyes meet mine and I can’t help but notice that they are darker than before. He looks scary and I feel about 2 feet tall. My eyes go to the floor and I realise he has my bags. I clear my throat, “Give me my bags Callen.” He doesn’t move, and i say it again, “Give me my bags Callen!” This time my voice is louder and he smirks at me as he drops the bags and then slowly cracks his knuckles, his voice is dark as he speaks, “Thank you for having us, but I believe it is getting late so we will be on our way. Good bye Lia, Matt.” He nods at them as he reaches out and grabs my wrist. I try to fight against him but it’s no use. He doesn’t even flinch. “Stop it!” I try to free my wrist but he just tightens his grip. “I said stop it Callen! I’m not going with you! Not over my dead body!” His grip instantly loosens as he stops and turns to me. His eyes now a midnight black as a smile crosses his face, “That can be arranged.” My whole body shivers as something hard falls across the back of my head and then.. nothing.
