From Evelyn’s Perspective
Just as I was about to work on my supply list, my phone suddenly rang — it was an unknown number. I hesitated for a moment before answering. A cold, deep male voice came from the other end:
“Evelyn Thorne? About the warehouse your parents left behind — I suggest you get rid of it as soon as possible. Otherwise, you’ll face the consequences.”
My heart tightened.
No one knew the warehouse address except me and Karen. Who was this? Sent by Karen? Or were there other forces targeting my parents’ estate?
“Who are you? How do you know about my warehouse?” I asked, forcing myself to stay calm.
The man on the line let out a cold laugh.
“You don’t need to know who I am. Just remember — don’t try any tricks. Hand over control of the warehouse obediently, and you might live.”
With that, the call ended. The dial tone buzzed in my ear, sending a chill through my whole body.
This sudden call made me realize things were far more complicated than I’d thought. Karen’s scheme, Sky’s greed, and this mysterious stranger’s threat — they closed in on me layer by layer, like an invisible net, ready to drag me back into the abyss.
I sat on the sofa and forced myself to calm down.
I couldn’t panic. Not now, of all times.
Maybe the mysterious man’s threat wasn’t entirely bad. If he really was after the warehouse, I could use him to disrupt Karen’s plan. But if he was working with Karen, I’d be in even greater danger.
I unlocked my phone and found Luna’s contact.
Luna had been my coworker in my past life, and she was brilliant at gathering information. Back then, she’d tried to warn me that Karen and Sky were more than just friends, but I’d misunderstood and insulted her. She’d ended up killed by thugs.
This time, I was determined to win her over and make her my informant.
I sent Luna a message:
“Luna, are you free? I need your help, and the pay will be good.”
She replied almost instantly:
“Evelyn, what’s wrong? Just say it. If I can do it, I will.”
A faint warmth spread through my chest.
Good. This time, there was still time to fix everything.
I typed back quickly:
“Tomorrow afternoon. I’ll meet you at the café downtown. We’ll talk in person.”
Just then, I heard soft footsteps outside the door — followed by the sound of a key turning in the lock.
Karen had come back.
He obviously didn’t trust me and had returned to spy on me.
With no time to think, I hid my phone, put on a docile expression again, and walked to the door to open it.
Karen stood in the doorway, looking slightly suspicious.
“Baby, I forgot something. What were you doing just now? Why did it take so long to open the door?”
I linked my arm through his and smiled sweetly.
“Nothing much. Just organizing the documents for the bank tomorrow. You don’t doubt me, do you?”
Karen ruffled my hair, doubt flickering in his eyes, but he smiled anyway.
“How could I doubt you? I just care about you too much.”
He stepped inside and scanned the room, as if searching for something. When his gaze fell on the ruby necklace on the nightstand, his eyes flickered, but he said nothing.
My heart tensed.
Karen had long had his eye on my parents’ belongings — he just hadn’t had a chance to take them.
This time, I would never let him succeed.
Karen lingered for about ten minutes, rummaging around, but found nothing. In the end, he left with visible frustration.
Watching his retreating back, I could no longer hold back. I slammed my fist against the wall, and my knuckles reddened instantly.
Anger, fear, anxiety — all tangled together, threatening to drown me.
But I knew I couldn’t break down. I had to stay strong.
I immediately turned on my computer and began planning frantically:
First, split my parents’ assets into two parts — one to an anonymous account I’d prepared long ago, the other for supplies.
Tomorrow at the bank, I’d deliberately drag out the transfer while Luna investigated the mysterious man and Karen’s recent investments.
At the same time, I’d contact a reliable construction company to fortify my 88th-floor Manhattan apartment, turning it into a fortress for the apocalypse.
I also needed to go to the black market to buy massive amounts of weapons, food, medicine, and building materials to fill my space.
I was deep in planning when my phone rang again. It was Luna.
I answered right away, and her voice sounded urgent:
“Evelyn, it’s bad. I just heard people at the office talking — Karen owes a huge gambling debt. He’s not asking for your assets for investments. He’s trying to pay off his loans! And I also heard he and Sky have been together for a long time. Once they get your money, they plan to leave New York immediately!”
Boom —
