From Evelyn’s Perspective
I stepped in front of Karen, knelt down, and squeezed his jaw tightly, my eyes sharp and ruthless.
“Karen, do you really think begging will help? When I begged you in my last life, why didn’t you spare me?”
Karen’s face turned ashen, terror filling his eyes. He struggled frantically.
“Evelyn, I was wrong! I’m so sorry! Please let me go! I’ll give all your money back! I’ll never lie to you again, okay?”
“Too late,” I sneered. “This time, I won’t give you any chances.”
Just as I was about to strike and teach him a brutal lesson, a shrill siren blared from the warehouse entrance, followed by Brock’s roar:
“Karen! I’m here to save you! Leave Evelyn and everything in this warehouse to me!”
At the sound of Brock’s voice, Karen’s eyes lit up instantly. He struggled to his feet, triumph in his tone.
“Evelyn! Kane Rossi! You’re dead! Brock is here! He’ll kill you both!”
Kane and I exchanged a glance, both seeing the gravity in each other’s eyes.
Brock was the most powerful gang leader in New York, with hundreds of ruthless men under him. Heavily armed, he was not to be underestimated.
Kane frowned, his voice icy.
“I didn’t expect Brock to arrive so quickly. He must have colluded with Karen from the start, waiting for us to fight so he could reap the benefits.”
My heart sank. The situation was now extremely unfavorable.
Kane’s men were skilled fighters, but Brock’s gang outnumbered us and had firearms — we stood no chance. Worse, the cramped warehouse left us trapped and vulnerable.
“What do we do now?” I asked Kane, urgency in my voice.
As much as I hated Karen, we had to work together to face Brock.
Kane’s gaze sharpened toward the entrance.
“We retreat first. Live to fight another day. Fighting Brock head‑on now would only be a waste.”
I nodded, knowing he was right. We had to escape for now and settle scores with Karen and Brock later.
Kane signaled his men to cover us, then grabbed my hand and ran toward the back exit of the warehouse.
Seeing us fleeing, Karen shouted at the top of his lungs:
“Brock! Stop them! Don’t let them get away!”
Behind us, Brock’s thugs burst in. Gunshots and screams erupted everywhere. Bullets whizzed past my ears, sending chills down my spine.
Kane held my hand tightly, moving fast, and we burst through the rear door.
We drove away from the warehouse, the gunshots and screams fading into the distance, but my nerves remained stretched tight.
Brock’s arrival had complicated everything. He was not just Karen’s loan shark — he was another massive obstacle in my apocalyptic revenge.
Kane looked at me, his tone softening slightly.
“Don’t be afraid. We’re safe now. As powerful as Brock is, he can’t find us easily. But we can’t let our guard down — he holds grudges and will come for us again.”
I nodded and stared out the window. Fine threads of rain were already drifting from the gray sky.
The acid rain had come early.
The rain pattered violently against the windows, as if announcing that the cruelty of the apocalypse had officially begun.
Now I had to face Karen’s retaliation, Brock’s threat, and carefully navigate an uneasy alliance with the mysterious Kane.
What worried me more was that I still hadn’t heard from Luna. Had she run into danger?
And what was the real feud between Kane and Brock?
Was his only reason for partnering with me really the confidential document and my space?
The rain fell harder, blurring the view outside… and blurring my future.
But I knew I could not back down, could not be afraid.
I had already lost too much in my rebirth.
This time, I would protect myself, complete my revenge, and carve a path to survival in New York, soon to be a wasteland.
Brock’s arrival, Karen’s counterattack, Kane’s mystery — all of them would just be stepping stones on my road to vengeance.
I squeezed Kane’s hand, my gaze firm.
“Kane, from now on, we are allies. Brock, Karen — whoever comes for us, we’ll face them together.”
Kane looked at me, a faint, meaningful smile curving his lips.
“Fine. Allies. Let’s see if, together, we can rise to godhood in this apocalypse.”
But I did not see the calculation and ambition that flashed deep in his eyes.
I thought I had found a reliable ally, not knowing I had already stepped into another, deeper trap.
And the confidential document I had taken from the warehouse held secrets far more terrifying than I could imagine — secrets that would completely change my fate, Kane’s fate, and the entire landscape of New York.
