Warehouse Confrontation

816 Words
From Evelyn’s Perspective Stepping into the warehouse, a wave of dust and mildew washed over me. The dim light left me struggling to adjust for a moment. The warehouse was huge, stacked with many old boxes — all belongings left by my parents. Cobwebs draped every corner, making it feel eerily gloomy. The men in black led me to the center of the warehouse, then stepped aside to form a circle, trapping me inside. I glanced around, but saw no one else. My unease grew heavier by the second — where was their boss? “Where is your boss?” I asked, forcing myself to stay calm. Just then, a deep, familiar-yet-strange male voice came from behind me. “Don’t worry. I’m right here.” I spun around sharply, my heart leaping into my throat. Standing before me was none other than my neighbor from the opposite apartment — Kane Rossi. He wore a black trench coat, his frame tall and straight. In his hand, he still held a glass of whiskey. His eyes were sharp as eagles, and a meaningful smile played on his lips — nothing like the mysterious threat I had pictured last night. “It’s you?” I gasped, stunned. “The calls, the messages… they were all from you? Why are you doing this? What do you want?” A million questions raced through my mind. I simply could not believe that this seemingly cold, distant neighbor was the one who had been threatening me. Kane stepped closer, looking down at me with a gaze that held curiosity and some complicated emotion I could not decipher. “Evelyn Thorne. What your parents left behind is far more valuable than you realize. I don’t want the warehouse. I want a confidential document from your parents… and your space.” Boom — The words exploded in my ears like thunder. He knew about the space. In my past life, I had only learned of its existence on my deathbed. In this life, I had told no one. How could he possibly know? “How do you know about the space?” I clenched my fists until my nails dug into my palms, my voice trembling with shock and wariness. Kane smiled and took a sip of whiskey. “I know far more than you think. For example… that you were reborn. That Karen and Sky are trying to steal your assets. That in one month, acid rain will fall and New York will become a living hell.” Every word struck straight to my core. I went cold all over, as if he had seen through every one of my secrets. This man was terrifying — a hunter lurking in the dark, silently watching me, knowing everything about me. Just when I thought I was trapped with no way out, Kane spoke again, his tone softening slightly. “You don’t have to be afraid. I mean you no harm, and I won’t hurt you. I need the confidential document to protect myself. And as for your space… I’m not here to take it. I’m here to propose a partnership.” “A partnership?” I frowned, confused. “What could we possibly have to cooperate on? You already have me surrounded. Why not just take what you want by force?” I did not believe his lies. This man was deep, ruthless, and his so-called partnership must hide an ulterior motive. Kane’s smile faded, his expression turning serious. “I can’t take your space. Only you can control it. Besides, we share common enemies — Karen, and the thugs who will run wild in the apocalypse. I have the force and connections. You have the space and supplies. Together, we can survive the end… and even control this city.” His words left me deep in thought. He was right. Karen’s schemes, Sky’s greed, and the coming apocalypse — I could not face them all alone. Kane had power and connections. Allying with him would save me a great deal of trouble and speed up my revenge and the construction of a safe zone. But I dared not trust him. The betrayal of my past life had made me unable to believe anyone easily. What’s more, this man knew all my secrets. If he turned on me, I would die a far more terrible death than before. As I hesitated, my phone suddenly buzzed. It was a message from Luna, only a few short lines: Evelyn, it’s bad! Karen’s gambling debt is owed to Brock — the gang leader! And that unknown number really belongs to Kane Rossi’s men! Also, Karen suspects something’s wrong. He’s already on his way to the warehouse! My heart sank. Karen was coming. He must have sensed something was off. He planned to take advantage of the chaos, seize everything in the warehouse… and maybe even kill me.
