When Dan woke up, he saw Sophia extinguishing the remnants of the campfire they had made last night, pouring seawater over it. Seeing Dan awake, she quickly ended up. "Oh, you're up?" she greeted him. "What are you doing? Leave it; I'll handle that later," Dan said with a broad yawn. "I wanted to get some things done early, so I should have woken up much earlier than that." She piled up the ashes from the previous night's fire and took them to the bushes to be used as fertilizer and neutralize the soil's acidity, strengthening the roots and branches of nearby plants, just as Dan had taught them.
