Emma slammed the enormous oak door behind her, protecting herself from Alexander Wolfe's frightening presence. She remained there for a long time, the scent of costly polish and old money lingering in the air, her mind attempting to digest the previous minutes. She got the job. Not just any job, but one that promised to lift her out of the continuous terror of living on the edge. The position also had the disturbing requirement of "dwelling on-site."
She smiled slowly and incredulously, then laughed softly and almost shakily. She wanted to shout, jump, and dance in the antiseptic hallway. Instead, she gave a modest fist pump, a little personal accomplishment. The sense of relief was nearly overwhelming. No more worrying about where the next meal would come from or how many hours of low-wage labor would be required to cover a small, roach-infested room.
Ms. Albright, the well-dressed assistant, reappeared, clipboard in hand. Her demeanor remained as stern as polished stone, but Emma saw a spark of something in her eyes, either surprise or reluctant admiration.
"Congratulations, Ms. Carter," Ms. Albright said, her tone still chilly. Please follow me. We have a lot of paperwork to do before you start tomorrow.
The "huge quantity" proved to be an understatement. Emma spent the next three hours in a brightly lit, impersonal office, signing non-disclosure agreements that seemed to last forever, confidentiality terms that made her head spin, and job contracts that confirmed her new reality. When she saw the payoff, she could not believe it. It was more money than she could have ever dreamed, enough to not just live but thrive, save, and even plan for a future beyond her current necessities.
The dwelling arrangement was next. It described the executive house, a multi-story structure located next to the main Wolfe Industries tower and linked by a private sky bridge. Her assigned unit was a "fully furnished, self-contained executive suite" on the tenth level. It sounded more like a hotel room than an apartment, although a beautiful one. The constraints were clear: She would have access to the building's facilities, including a gym, a lounge, and even a private food delivery service, but her main goal was to contact Alexander Wolfe. Each statement and signature emphasized the importance of being prudent. Her new existence would center mostly on Wolfe Industries.
Emma emerged from the corporate maze when the sun had fallen, and the city lights were on. She felt an odd combination of thrill and uneasiness. She had a job, a life-changing one, but it seemed like she had walked into a golden cage.
Her initial inclination was to contact Sarah. Sarah was Emma's rock confidante, and the one person who understood her hectic lifestyle. They had met years ago as volunteers at a local community center, bonding over their shared scepticism, love of cheap coffee, and sharp wit. Sarah, with her wild red hair and paint-splattered trousers (she was an aspiring artist), was the polar opposite of the pristine business world Emma had just joined.
Emma almost grabbed her phone from her torn handbag, trembling as she dialed.
"Emma! Where have you been? Sarah's familiar, joyous voice washed over the speaker, immediately relieving Emma's anxiousness.
"Worse," Emma said, her voice still full of amazement. "I have a job."
Have you got a job? That is wonderful! Which one? "The coffee shop that advertised 'flexible hours' but really meant 'we will contact you if someone calls in sick'?" Sarah laughed.
"No," Emma breathed softly. The Wolfe Industries One. Executive Assistant to Alexander Wolfe."
There was startled stillness at the other end. Then came a screech that almost tore Emma's eardrums. "No way!" How about Alexander Wolfe? Is Ice King a billionaire? Emma, are you serious?
"Dead serious," Emma said, smiling despite herself. "Plus, it includes an apartment." On-site. For example, inside a building. I adore where I work today."
Another wave of ecstatic gasps and squeals followed. "Oh God, Emma!" This is enormous. That is it! No more eating ramen, sleeping on my awful sofa, or hiding from the homeowner! "It is great!"
Sarah's infectious delight was contagious, and Emma found herself laughing aloud for the first time that day. "It is a lot." He is intense, Sarah. Very intense. It is also frigid. It is as chilly as the Arctic. He may be a robot at times.
"Hello, robots pay well!" Sarah answered, remaining realistic. "You, my brilliant and resilient buddy, can manage any situation." You made it through Mrs. Henderson's 'educational' foster home. Alexander Wolfe is nothing compared to her latent hatred."
Emma giggled. Mrs Henderson, with her charming smile and sharp criticism, was a formidable opponent. "True. However, this is not like the others. It is like entering a whole other universe. "Everyone walks with purpose, whispers are quiet, and the air smells of money and ambition."
"You will adjust," Sarah said firmly. "You always do." Emma, you are a chameleon. "You blend in, learn, and then, without their awareness, take over."
"I do not intend to take over Wolfe Industries, Sarah," Emma chuckled. Just getting through the first week. He said that his previous three assistants lasted less than a month.
"Then you will be the fourth and last," Sarah said. Because you are Emma Carter, and you refuse to give up. So, where would you want to celebrate? Should I simply come over to your stunning new executive suite with a bottle of dodgy Prosecco?"
"I begin tomorrow," Emma remarked, suddenly realizing how much she still had to learn about Alexander Wolfe's preferences, timetable, and organizational structure. A quiet night examining his itinerary is more fitting.
"Boring!" Sarah moaned playfully. "But that is understandable." However, this needs an appropriate celebration. We will organize something special for your first paycheck. Now, tell me everything. What is the office like? Is it just glass and steel? Does he have a hidden lair? "Is he wearing a cape?"
Emma giggled as she described the big, uncomplicated workspace, the panoramic view, and Alexander's determined spirit. Sarah's inquiries, no matter how little, helped Emma restore her calm after the overpowering magnificence she had just seen.
"I need to go, Sarah," Emma replied, checking her watch. It was late, and she was ready for a long night. "I needed to hurry home, get my few things, and attempt to make sense of everything. They need me there bright and early tomorrow."
"Okay, superstar," Sarah said gleefully. "Get some sleep." You have earned it, Emma. Seriously. I am proud of you. Kindly contact me as soon as possible.
"I will," Emma vowed, overcome with sorrow for her buddy. Sarah's unshakable belief in herself was a distinguishing and noteworthy characteristic.
Emma hung up, allowing the severity of her new situation to sink in once again. The trek to her little rented room looked unusual today. It is more of a goodbye tour than a way to locate a temporary shelter. Her little stuff may fit into a single duffel bag. She spent years eliminating and reducing, constantly prepared to move, adapt, and survive. For the first time, she would not have to.
Emma could not take Alexander Wolfe's piercing blue eyes out of her mind as she packed the few books she had, her fading sketchbook, and her only good work shoes. He was once a natural force, a mystery, and now he is her employer, the new gravitational pull in her life.
The apartment she was moving into tomorrow, her "executive suite", was most likely larger than her whole existing living area. It marked a significant improvement over her previous conditions. But was it a home? Or was it just a lavish and intimate extension of her new, demanding job?
She zipped up her duffel bag, the slight scent of old ramen still lingering on her clothing. She took one more glance around the tight, familiar room. Tomorrow, she will join Alexander Wolfe's world, which is rich and powerful. She was leaving all she knew and had been used to. The security seemed enticing, but the unknown was a wide and black ocean.
Emma shook from fear and exhilaration. What exactly awaited her in that golden cage? And how much would it cost her to be so close to Alexander Wolfe, a man who is both terrifying and alluring? She knew her life had just altered. The true test of her fortitude had begun.
