6: Under Glass DJ woke with a thud. The floppy floor beneath him moved over uneven rollers. It carried him head-first toward a grinding growl. Fighting through a body full of aches, DJ looked up into the mouth of the noise. He lay on his side on a conveyor belt moving toward a mulcher. He was about to become fertilizer. He tried to yank himself off the belt, but his arms wouldn’t pull. He tried to roll over the side, but he couldn’t rock enough to roll over. He couldn’t make a fist. He couldn’t lift his leg. The cold had made his muscles clench so tight for so long that they had no strength left. He lay there watching mounds of compost fall off the end into the roar below and imagined falling into those spinning teeth face-first. His heart raced, but even the jolt of adrenalin couldn’t
