The first clue was a buzz in his pocket while he was chewing the fat (literally) with his Boston buddy in a South End deli. A text from Dave Wheeler: CG search for mystery sailboat off XYC ??? When Pete texted back, Dave didn’t answer. On his way to the Exmouth Yacht Club, no doubt, for the Cape Cod Times.
Pete called home and netted two more details from his sergeant. The mystery sailboat was a drifting sloop, reported by a couple sailing from Exmouth Harbor to Nantucket. The Coast Guard had dispatched a search helicopter from the Air Station at the Joint Base to check it out.
Not unusual. Still, Detective Altman felt a well-known prickling at the back of his neck. OK with HQ if he took a look?
