SHADOW AND SPARKS

Chapter Six: Shadows and Sparks The air in the Crescent camp hung heavy with smoke and whispers. The fire from last night’s attack had long died, but the fear it birthed had not. Eyes followed Lyra wherever she walked — eyes that once looked past her now burned with suspicion and awe. She could still feel the pulse of what she had done. The wave of energy that exploded from her hands. The glowing light that tore through the forest, sending beasts running and saving Kael’s life. She hadn’t meant to — it had just… happened. And now, the entire pack knew. “Don’t wander off alone,” Kael’s voice rumbled behind her. Lyra froze. Even when he wasn’t near, his presence always felt close — a weight in the air, a quiet strength. “I’m fine,” she said, though her voice betrayed her. “They’re staring because they think I’m dangerous.” Kael stepped beside her, his dark cloak brushing her arm. “They’re staring because you are dangerous. But danger isn’t always a curse.” His tone was calm, but his golden eyes held something else — curiosity, maybe even fear. He had seen her power flare like a storm, and even he didn’t understand it. The two of them walked through the camp. The wolves bowed slightly to Kael but avoided Lyra’s gaze. The smell of ash and pine filled the morning air. When they reached the edge of the camp, Kael stopped. “You saved lives last night. Don’t let their silence make you forget that.” “I didn’t save them,” she whispered. “I lost control. If I had aimed the wrong way, I could’ve—” Kael took a slow breath, the kind that made his chest rise like a mountain. “Control can be learned. What matters is you acted. You didn’t freeze.” Lyra looked up at him. “You talk like someone who’s made peace with his curse.” Kael’s lips twitched — not quite a smile. “I had to. Or it would’ve eaten me alive.” They stood in silence for a moment. The forest around them murmured softly, leaves whispering secrets. Then footsteps broke the quiet. It was Rhea, Kael’s fiancée. Her beauty, sharp and cold as moonlight, never failed to make Lyra uneasy. “Alpha,” Rhea said, bowing slightly before turning to Lyra. “We need to talk about her.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “Not now.” “Yes, now,” Rhea insisted. “You saw what she did. No one in this pack has power like that — not even you. What if she’s a spy? What if her magic draws more enemies?” Lyra’s heart pounded. “I didn’t choose this! You think I asked for it?” Rhea stepped closer, her eyes flashing silver. “Then prove it. Leave. Before someone gets hurt again.” Kael’s growl cut through the air like thunder. “Enough, Rhea.” The camp went quiet. Even the wind seemed to hold its breath. Kael’s gaze never left Rhea’s. “She’s under my protection. Anyone who lays a hand on her answers to me.” Rhea’s face hardened, but she said nothing more. With a flick of her cloak, she turned and stormed off. Lyra swallowed hard. “You didn’t have to do that,” she said softly. “I did.” Kael’s tone was firm, but his eyes softened when they met hers. “If they can’t see what I saw last night — the courage, the strength — then they’re blind.” A quiet warmth spread through Lyra’s chest. For the first time since her exile, someone believed in her. But that warmth faded as fast as it came. “They won’t forgive me easily,” she said. “Then don’t ask them to.” Kael turned toward the forest, his voice low. “Make them respect you.” The words settled in her like fire. She didn’t know how, or when, but something inside her knew he was right. That night, as the camp slept, Lyra stood by the river. The moonlight reflected on the water — calm, silver, endless. She held her hands above the surface, watching faint ripples of light dance between her fingers. Magic. It had always been there, hiding under her skin, waiting for something — or someone — to wake it. And Kael had seen it first. “Whatever this is,” she whispered to her reflection, “I’ll learn to control it. Before it controls me.” A faint glow shimmered in her eyes before fading again into the night.
