Chapter Twenty Duvät Sunny skies warmed him from above, dainty wavelets lapped at his toes and all was at peace. He raised his hand to shield his eyes from the glare and looked down the long arc of the inner sea to the drama of the volcano, still belching smoke and flame. His skin began to crawl. The mountains were watching him: he could feel it. He backed away from the waves as seething monsters began to crawl blindly toward him. They sang in eerie screams, their tortured voices calling his name – “Duvät! Duvät Gok!” He tried to run, but even with no eyes the creatures followed. Sand clung to his feet. Nameless refuse gripped his legs. He was sinking. He couldn’t run fast enough. “Duvät!” the voices howled. Duvät Gok … He woke with a gasp. The wailing receded. His eyes slowly focused
