Chapter Eighteen Leahät Leahät Gok slumped in her seat and lowered her head to her arms. At last, Duvät’s pain had subsided. Perhaps he was unconscious again. The silence in her home was complete. She had not wanted him to suffer. After the horror of Lind and the other poor creatures he’d tortured, she’d just wanted him dead – but now, the torment he endured was so terrible it could not be blocked out. Surely such agony could be no worse than what she would have experienced if their marriage had been excised. If only they would let him die! Weary to the core, her fingers traced familiar textures on the battered kitchen table, thankful for its solid presence. When he was at home, her husband insisted it be covered with a cloth, but now it was bare and she soaked up the precious memories
