Chapter Seven: A Prince’s Interest

429 Words
As the court dispersed, Lin Yue felt a presence beside her. She turned to see a young man, his features strikingly handsome, his smile warm and disarming. “Lady Lin Yue,” he said, his voice smooth. “I don’t believe we’ve been properly introduced. I am Prince Zhao Tai.” Lin Yue inclined her head politely. “Your Highness.” His gaze lingered on her, curiosity glinting in his eyes. “You’re an intriguing woman, Lady Lin Yue. I look forward to seeing more of you in court.” Lin Yue offered a faint smile, her thoughts guarded. She would have to tread carefully around him. A prince’s interest could be both a blessing and a curse. The stillness of the palace at night was deceptive, its grand halls and manicured gardens hiding secrets beneath the moonlight. Lin Yue stood before a mirror, her reflection cloaked in the simple garments of a servant. Her hair, usually styled in intricate braids as befitting a concubine, was now tied in a plain knot under a cap. Her delicate features were obscured by dirt and soot, and her posture slouched to mimic the demeanor of a common maid. She adjusted her disguise once more, ensuring there were no loose threads in her plan. Behind her, Xiu’er nervously wrung her hands. “Mistress, are you sure about this?” Xiu’er whispered. “If anyone discovers you’ve left the palace…” “They won’t,” Lin Yue said firmly, her tone leaving no room for argument. “You’ll stay here and act as though I’ve fallen ill. If anyone comes looking, keep them out.” Xiu’er hesitated, then nodded. “I understand.” Satisfied, Lin Yue slipped out of her chambers, her steps light and deliberate. The palace was a labyrinth of watchful eyes, but Lin Yue had spent days studying the guards’ routines. She moved like a shadow, her assassin training coming back to her as naturally as breathing. The cool night air greeted her as she crossed the final gate. Lin Yue allowed herself a moment of relief, but her mind remained sharp. This was just the first step. She had one goal: to find power. The palace was a den of predators, and she refused to remain defenseless. Her body was recovering faster than expected, but she needed more than physical strength. She needed resources, allies, and knowledge of the world beyond the palace walls. The city of Hanzhou stretched before her, alive with the hum of late-night activity. Lin Yue adjusted her cap, blending into the crowd with ease.
