Chapter Five: Shadows and Deceptions

405 Words
The palace was a maze of gleaming corridors and hidden daggers, each step Lin Yue took laden with danger. Her body was healing slowly, her strength returning thanks to Xiu’er’s diligent care and the secret herbs she procured. But Lin Yue knew better than to let her guard down. The palace wasn’t just filled with enemies—it was filled with traps, both obvious and subtle. Her first priority had been clear: identify her allies and enemies. In this place, knowing who to trust could mean the difference between life and death. Lin Yue had quickly observed that most of the palace maids served two masters: their immediate mistress and their own ambition. Servants whispered behind doors, carried secrets like currency, and reported to whomever they thought held the most power. It was a delicate balance of loyalty and survival. Xiu’er had proven herself trustworthy so far, her devotion unshakable. Lin Yue made a mental note to reward her loyalty when the time came. But others were less reliable. Among the ministers, Lin Yue noticed the quiet glances and shared whispers during her brief appearances at court. Minister Fang, a graying man with sharp eyes, seemed indifferent to her, his gaze always on Emperor Zhao Ming. On the other hand, Minister Zhu, a younger man with a calculating smirk, watched her far too closely, as if trying to gauge her worth. Her family, however, was another matter entirely. The Lin family had fallen out of favor long before her arrival in this world. They had once been a powerful noble house, but years of mismanagement and scandal had reduced them to the emperor’s reluctant servants. Lin Yue knew they would be no help to her. Her only true advantage lay in staying under the radar, blending into the background while gathering information. Lin Yue’s peace didn’t last long. One afternoon, as she rested in her chambers, Xiu’er rushed in, her face pale. “Mistress, Concubine Yao has invited you to the imperial gardens for tea.” Lin Yue’s lips twitched into a faint smile. “How gracious of her.” Xiu’er hesitated. “Mistress, I think it’s a trap. Concubine Yao doesn’t hide her disdain for you. Why would she invite you so suddenly?” Lin Yue rose from her seat, smoothing the folds of her dress. “Because she wants to test me,” she said calmly. “And I intend to pass.”
