The system of communication between Inspector Encinas and his secret informer had been very neat, but the time had come to go a step further and move beyond its limitations. He needed to establish direct, face-to-face communication. And he also needed to talk to Marina, the nightclub waitress. She had vanished without trace and he needed to talk to her, if it turned out that she was still in Spain. And this is what he told his informer. But when he got the answer, he went cold:
They are watching me all the time. We can’t be seen together. Certainly not at the police station.
