I glance back at the firefighter, but he’s already turned away from me, heading back toward the coffee machine that is beeping, signalling that it has finished. He swaps over the mugs, pressing the start button again before reaching for the sugar canister and opening it. He lifts out a generous scoop, pouring it into the mug before adding a dash of milk and stirring it. The machine beeps again, the firefighter lifting the second mug from underneath, before turning around and carrying them back to me, handing me the one with the milk and sugar in it.
