Chapter 8: Dancing with Danger

786 Words
Eleanor’s sharp, mocking smile cut through me like shards of glass. I could feel Julian’s fingers digging firmly into the small of my back through the emerald silk of my gown—a silent, heavy reminder of who owned my time, my safety, and my silence. "Clara is my personal archivist, Eleanor," Julian said, his voice dropping into a register so cold it could have frozen the champagne in the surrounding glasses. "Her presence here is entirely my business. Not yours." The word personal had an edge to it. Like a warning. Eleanor let out a soft, melodic laugh that didn't reach her calculating eyes. She took a slow sip of champagne, her gaze never leaving mine. "Of course, darling. Just ensure she doesn't end up like the last thing you tried to keep hidden." Her eyes flicked to Julian's, then back to me. With a final, lingering look at my trembling hands, she melted back into the crowd of masked elites. Diamonds flashing. Poison trailing behind her. I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding. It came out shaky. "Julian, she knows something," I whispered, looking up at his masked face. "About Arthur. About—" "She knows how to draw blood, Clara," he murmured, cutting me off. His grip tightened, fingers splayed possessively across my back. "Nothing more. Stay close." The jazz music swelled around us. I nodded, trying to steady my breathing. "Clara? Is that really you?" A hand suddenly wrapped around my wrist, pulling me gently but firmly away from Julian’s side. I spun around, my breath hitching. Standing before me was a tall man wearing a simple silver mask. No jewels. No feathers. Just plain metal. Even with his face partially covered, I recognized him instantly. The sharp jawline. The messy brownish hair that always fell over his forehead. And the intense hazel eyes that had seen me cry over failed exams and hospital bills. "Adrian?" I gasped. My voice cracked. Adrian Vance. My closest childhood friend. A brilliant investigative journalist who had written exposés that took down two mayors. And the only person who had tried to help me when my mother first fell ill. He sold his car to pay for her first round of chemo. I hadn't seen him in months. Not since I took the Sterling job. "What are you doing here?" Adrian whispered, his eyes scanning my expensive emerald gown, the diamond pins in my hair, Julian's hand on my back. His expression shifted from shock to immediate worry. "I've been looking for you everywhere. You stopped answering my calls. Your apartment is empty. Clara, what is going on? Are you okay?" Before I could answer, before I could even open my mouth, a heavy, suffocating shadow fell over us. Julian stepped between us. His massive frame completely cut off Adrian's view of me. The surrounding temperature dropped twenty degrees. Julian didn't just step in. He moved like a predator. He forcefully grabbed Adrian's hand off my wrist, casting it aside with a brutal, flexing snap of his arm. The sound was loud. "Remove your hands from her," Julian growled, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that promised violence. It wasn't loud. It was worse. It was quiet. He didn't just sound protective. He sounded entirely, dangerously possessive. Like I was property. Adrian didn't back down. He stepped up, matching Julian's height. His jaw clenched. His hazel eyes flashed with anger and something else—recognition. "And who the hell are you?" Adrian demanded. "I'm her friend. I've known her for ten years. Since we were kids." "I don't care if you've known her for a lifetime," Julian whispered. He leaned in so close their masks almost touched. I could feel his breath on my neck. Then Julian reached back. His arm wrapped completely around my waist, pulling my back flush against his chest in a blatant, public display of ownership. I could feel every muscle in his body. Rigid. Furious. "She is mine," Julian said. The words were soft. Final. Deadly. "She works for me. She lives under my roof. And she answers only to me." His thumb brushed against my hip, once. "Touch her again," Julian continued, his voice dropping to something only Adrian and I could hear, " And I will have my security throw you out of this building headfirst. Walk away." The music played on. Champagne glasses clinked. But in our little circle, the air was thick with threat. Adrian's eyes flicked at me. To my face. Searching for something. Permission. Fear. I couldn't breathe. "Clara," Adrian said softly, ignoring Julian completely. "Blink if you need help." Julian's arm tightened around me. The unspoken war had just begun.
