The tension in the back of Julian's luxury limousine on the ride back to the estate was thick enough to suffocate.
The partition was rolled up, separating us from the driver. Leather-scented air. Dim amber lights. A vacuum where the only sound was our breathing and the rain hitting the windows.
Julian sat across from me, his tuxedo jacket unbuttoned, his bow tie loosened. The black silk mask was discarded on the seat beside him like he had torn it off the second we got in.
His gray eyes burned through the shadows, tracking every breath I took. Every blink. Every time my fingers twisted in the emerald silk of my gown.
"Who is he?" Julian demanded, his voice dangerously calm. Too calm. The kind of calm before a storm.
The question hung in the air.
"He's just a friend, Julian!" I snapped, my own adrenaline finally boiling over. Fear turned to anger. "Adrian is a good person. He was trying to make sure I was okay because I vanished into your prison of a house! Because you told me I couldn't leave!"
The word prison made his jaw tick.
In a flash, Julian moved.
He crossed the space between the seats in one second. His large frame crowded me into the corner of the leather bench. I had nowhere to go.
He pinned his hands on either side of my head, caging me in. The scent of cedarwood and whiskey and rain surrounded me. He leaned down until his lips were inches from mine.
The sheer, overwhelming possessiveness radiating off him made my pulse skyrocket. I could feel his heart hammering. Or maybe that was mine.
"I don't care what he was trying to do," Julian growled, his breath hot against my neck. It made me shiver. "You do not let another man touch you. You do not look at another man like you need him to save you."
His hand came up. His fingers brushed my cheek, then my jaw. The touch was gentle and terrifying at the same time.
"Look at me, Clara."
I forced myself to meet his icy gaze. Up close, I could see the gold flecks in his gray eyes. I could see the exhaustion. The anger. The fear.
"You don't own me," I whispered. But my voice shook.
A bitter laugh escaped him. "Your debts say otherwise. Your contract says otherwise."
His hand slid down from the seat. His fingers gently but firmly wrapped around my throat. Not squeezing. Just... there. His thumb traced my jawline, slow and deliberate.
It wasn't painful. It was an intoxicating, terrifying hold. Like being caught in a snare made of silk.
"But it's more than that now, isn't it?" he whispered. His eyes dropped to my lips. Lingering. Before rising back to mine. "You know what I'm capable of. You saw me tonight. You know the monsters outside are watching. You know Eleanor would use you to get to me."
His thumb pressed lightly against my pulse point. Feeling it race.
"You belong in my shadow, Clara," he said, the words soft and final. "Nowhere else is safe for you. Not with Adrian. Not alone. With me."
The car hit a bump. I gasped.
Before I could process the words, before I could answer, his lips brushed against the sensitive skin beneath my ear.
It wasn't a kiss. Not yet.
It was a promise. A brand. A warning.
A violent shockwave of desire and terror shot straight down my spine. My hands came up, gripping his jacket like I was drowning and he was the only thing to hold onto.
He pulled back just an inch. His eyes were dark. Hungry.
"Say it," he whispered against my skin. "Say you understand."
"Julian—"
"Say it, Clara."
The limo slowed. We were at the gates. The iron groaned open.
I couldn't breathe. Couldn't think.
"I understand," I whispered finally.
Julian closed his eyes for a second, like the words hurt him. Like they relieved him.
When the car stopped, he pulled away immediately. All the heat gone. The mask back on.
He opened the door and stepped out, offering me his hand. The perfect gentleman again.
But as we walked into the house, his hand stayed at the small of my back. Possessive. Claiming.
And I knew things had changed.
There was no going back to just being his archivist.
I was his now. In every way that mattered.
And the worst part was... part of me wanted it.
