The Road Beyond the Desert

597 Words
The desert was finally quiet. Ash drifted slowly across the sand where the battle had taken place the night before. Broken bones, melted weapons, and scorched ground were all that remained of the shadow creature’s army. But the creature itself had vanished. Kael stood on a rocky ridge overlooking the battlefield, the flaming sword now resting quietly at his side. The fire had faded, leaving only a faint warmth along the blade. He exhaled slowly. For the first time since the battle began, the wind carried no screams, no roars—only silence. Behind him, Lyra stretched her arms with a small yawn. “I’m glad we survived that,” she said. “Next time we fight something like that… remind me to stay far away.” Kael chuckled quietly. “You were the one jumping in front of the monster half the time.” Lyra smirked. “Yeah, well… someone had to protect the hero.” Nearby, Seraphine knelt beside the sand, studying strange markings carved into a broken piece of bone armor from the shadow creature. Her icy eyes narrowed. “This wasn’t just a random monster,” she said. Kael looked down at her. “What do you mean?” Seraphine turned the bone fragment toward the sunlight. Ancient symbols were etched into its surface. “These marks belong to a forgotten order from the old war,” she explained. “Someone summoned that creature.” Lyra blinked. “You mean… there’s someone controlling these things?” Seraphine nodded. “Exactly.” A cold wind swept across the desert as the reality settled in. The battle they fought might only have been the beginning. From the dunes behind them, footsteps approached carefully. Kim. She had followed them quietly since the battle ended, keeping her distance. Now she stood only a few meters away. Kael turned when he heard the sand crunch. For a moment, the two of them simply stared at each other. Kim’s pendant glowed faintly. Kael felt the sword vibrate slightly in response. Neither of them understood why. Kim hesitated before speaking. “Are… are you traveling somewhere?” she asked cautiously. Lyra raised an eyebrow and glanced at Kael. “Well, that was random.” Kael rubbed the back of his neck. “We’re heading east,” he said. “There’s supposed to be an old city beyond the desert.” Seraphine stood and crossed her arms. “The ruins of Astrael,” she said. “A place where knowledge from the ancient war was hidden.” Lyra grinned. “So basically… treasure, secrets, and probably more monsters.” Kim looked thoughtful for a moment. Then she spoke again. “I… know the desert paths,” she said quietly. “If you want… I could guide you.” Lyra leaned closer to Kael and whispered teasingly. “Looks like you’re recruiting fans now.” Kael ignored her and studied Kim carefully. Something about her felt strangely familiar. But he couldn’t explain why. Seraphine, however, was watching Kim very closely. Her instincts rarely failed her. And something about this girl felt… important. Finally, Kael nodded. “Alright,” he said. “You can come with us.” Kim smiled faintly. “Thank you.” The group began walking across the endless dunes, leaving the battlefield behind them. Ahead of them, far beyond the desert horizon, ancient ruins waited. Secrets of the old war. Answers about the shadow creatures. And perhaps the truth about the river child. But hidden deep beneath the sands, something else stirred. Watching. Waiting. And learning. To be continued…
