The desert sky turned darker than night.
Clouds twisted violently above the battlefield as lightning cracked across the heavens, illuminating the towering shadow that stood before Kael. What had once been a single monstrous form was now shifting, expanding, as if the darkness itself had awakened.
Kael tightened his grip on the flaming sword.
The blade roared with fire, brighter than before, casting orange light across the sand. Every breath he took felt heavier, yet the heat inside him kept growing stronger.
Lyra stood beside him, flames circling her hands like burning wings.
“Kael…” she said quietly, trying to hide the fear in her voice. “Something about that thing… it’s changing.”
Seraphine stepped forward, frost spreading across the ground beneath her feet. Her eyes were sharp, calculating every movement of the enemy.
“You’re right,” she said coldly. “It’s evolving.”
The shadow suddenly roared.
The sound shook the entire desert.
Bones scattered across the battlefield lifted into the air, drawn together by a dark force. The skeletal remains twisted and fused into the creature’s body, forming armor made of ancient bones.
Its size doubled.
Two massive wings of shadow burst from its back.
The ground cracked beneath its weight.
Kael felt a chill run down his spine.
But he refused to step back.
The sword in his hands ignited even brighter, flames spiraling upward like a pillar of fire.
“I won’t run,” Kael said, his voice steady now.
The creature lunged forward.

A massive claw slammed into the ground where Kael had been standing moments before, sending sand flying in every direction.

Her fire shot forward in a blazing arc, smashing into the monster’s arm. Flames spread across the bone armor, melting pieces away.

Seraphine lifted her hand.
“Ice Dominion.”
The air instantly froze.
Hundreds of razor-sharp ice spears formed around her and shot forward like arrows, piercing into the monster’s wings and shoulders. Cracks spread across the bone armor as frost crawled over its surface.

The creature stopped moving.
“Now, Kael!” Seraphine shouted.
Kael ran.
Every step felt like fire flowing through his body. The sword vibrated in his hands as if it had been waiting for this moment.
He jumped.
Flames exploded around him as he swung the sword downward with everything he had.
“INFERNO STRIKE!”
The blade slammed into the creature’s chest.
A massive explosion of fire erupted across the desert.
The bone armor shattered.
Black energy spilled into the air like smoke.
The monster screamed in fury.
Kael landed hard on the sand, breathing heavily.

It looked like they had won.

The smoke began to move.
The shattered bones slowly started rebuilding themselves.

A baby being carried away by the current.
A woman crying out his name.
“Kael…”
Kim gasped.
Her heart started racing.
“…Brother?”
Back on the battlefield, the shadow creature lifted its massive head.
Its glowing eyes locked onto Kim.
It had sensed her.
The monster slowly raised its arm, gathering a massive sphere of dark energy above its claw.
Seraphine’s eyes widened.
“That attack… if it hits the ground…”
Lyra’s voice trembled.
“The whole desert will explode.”
Kael turned and saw where the creature was aiming.
Kim.
His chest tightened.
He didn’t know who she was.
But something deep inside him screamed that she must be protected.
Kael raised his sword again.
The flames roared louder than ever before.
And for the first time—
The fire began spreading from the sword into his entire body.
His eyes started glowing with the same burning light.
The power of the river… was finally beginning to awaken.
The shadow released the dark sphere.
And Kael stepped forward to meet it.
