The Truth Lyra Hides

1002 Words
The night refused to rest. Even after the shadows disappeared, the forest felt wrong—too quiet, too still. Like something unseen was still watching, waiting for the right moment to strike again. Kael sat against a tree, his breathing slowly returning to normal. His body ached, but it wasn’t the pain that troubled him. It was the fire. It had responded… on its own. Not like before. Not like something he controlled. But like something that controlled him. He clenched his hand, staring at it. “…What am I becoming?” he whispered. “You’re finally becoming what you were meant to be.” The voice came from the darkness. Kael looked up. Lyra. She stood a few steps away, arms crossed, her expression unreadable as always. “You say things like that,” Kael said, his voice tired, “but you never explain anything.” Lyra didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she stepped closer, her boots crunching lightly against dry leaves. “You want answers?” she said quietly. Kael met her gaze. “For once… yes.” For a moment, it looked like she wouldn’t respond. Like always. Like she would just walk away and leave him with more questions. But this time… She didn’t. “…Those weren’t normal shadows,” Lyra said. “I figured that much.” “They were sent.” Kael’s expression hardened. “By the King?” Lyra nodded once. “They weren’t there to kill you.” “I noticed,” Kael said bitterly. “They were watching me like I was some kind of experiment.” “You are.” The words landed heavy. Kael’s chest tightened. “What is that supposed to mean?” Lyra’s eyes softened—just slightly. Almost unnoticeable. “…It means you’re important. More than you understand.” “That’s not an answer.” “No,” she admitted, “it’s not.” Silence stretched between them again. But this time, it wasn’t empty. It was heavy. Full of things left unsaid. “You knew this would happen, didn’t you?” Kael said suddenly. Lyra didn’t react. “You knew they were coming. You knew something like this would happen to me.” Still no answer. Kael stood up slowly, anger rising beneath the surface. “Say something!” “I didn’t know when,” she said quietly. That stopped him. “But I knew it would happen,” she continued. Kael stared at her. “…So you’ve been watching me this whole time? Waiting for me to turn into… whatever this is?” Lyra’s gaze dropped for a brief second. “…I was sent to find you.” The words hung in the air. Cold. Sharp. Unavoidable. Kael took a step back. “…Sent? By who?” Lyra hesitated. And that hesitation said more than anything else. Kael’s voice dropped. “…By the King?” “No.” She looked up again. “…By the ones who fight him.” That didn’t make it better. “You’re not making sense,” Kael said. “If you’re on my side, why hide all this?” “Because you weren’t ready.” “I almost lost control tonight!” “And if I had told you earlier,” Lyra snapped, her voice suddenly sharper than ever, “you would’ve broken long before now.” The force in her words silenced him. For the first time… Lyra looked emotional. Not angry. Not cold. But… conflicted. “I’ve seen what happens to people like you,” she said more quietly. “They don’t survive it.” Kael’s breathing slowed. “…People like me?” Lyra looked away. “…Those chosen by the flame.” Behind the trees, Kim stood frozen. She hadn’t meant to listen. But now… She couldn’t walk away. Her grip tightened around her pendant as Lyra’s words sank in. Chosen… Kael wasn’t just special. He was something more. Something dangerous. Kael ran a hand through his hair, frustration building again. “So what, I’m just some weapon now?” Lyra shook her head. “No.” She stepped closer. Too close. “You’re a risk.” That hurt more than anything. Before Kael could respond— A sharp sound cut through the forest. Not distant. Not faint. Close. Very close. Seraphine’s voice followed immediately: “Everyone—move!” The ground trembled. Not like before. Heavier. Slower. More deliberate. From the darkness ahead, something massive began to emerge. Not like the others. This one didn’t flicker. It didn’t hide. It walked forward… like it had nothing to fear. Kael’s heart dropped. “…What is that?” Lyra’s expression hardened instantly. “…That’s not a scout.” The creature stepped into the light. Tall. Armored in shadow so dense it looked solid. Its eyes glowed deep crimson. And unlike the others— It smiled. “Found you.” Its voice was low… distorted… but clear. Kael froze. It wasn’t just attacking. It was speaking. Kim stepped forward instinctively, her pendant glowing. “Stay back!” Lyra snapped. But the creature didn’t move. It simply looked at Kael. “…You’ve grown,” it said slowly. Kael’s chest tightened. “You… know me?” The creature tilted its head. “…I’ve been waiting for you.” Without warning— It vanished. And reappeared right in front of Kael. Too fast. Far too fast. Kael barely reacted, flames bursting from his arm as he blocked the incoming strike. The impact sent shockwaves through the ground. His body shook violently. The fire flared— Wild. Unstable. Lyra moved instantly, striking from the side—but the creature caught her blade mid-air. “…Assassin,” it said calmly. And then— It threw her. Hard. “Lyra!” Kael shouted. His vision blurred again. The fire surged. The same feeling returned. That loss of control. That pull into something deeper. Darker. Stronger. “…Yes,” the creature whispered, watching him closely. “Show me.” Kael’s flames exploded outward— Brighter than ever before.
