Episode 5

The evening wind of Chicago ripping through Lila Monroe’s jacket as she leaned at the back of a rusted shipping container at the pier, the midnight air tainted with the smell of oil and salt. The city’s light could barely be seen from this distance, but here, in the abandoned warehouses, danger could literally be felt in the air. Her phone’s screen which she had to reduce the brightness, displaying the video Tess hacked from the camera feed: two men, one was scarred on his cheek, the other held a briefcase, standing under a street night lamp. The man in the dark coat—the same one from outside Wolfe Industries—was there, too, his burner phone pressed to his ear. Lila’s heart pounded. This was the Project Shadow meeting, her chance to tie Damien Wolfe to the corruption that destroyed her father’s company. But Dylan’s face kept intruding—his teasing smile, the photo linking him to Wolfe’s security team. Was he part of this, luring her into a trap? She adjusted the voice recorder in her pocket, its weight a small comfort against the fear gnawing her gut. Tess’s text from earlier burned in her mind: No Dylan Carter at Wolfe Industries. Blurry gala photo—looks like him with Wolfe’s security. If Dylan was working for Wolfe, every moment she’d spent with him—the diner, the elevator, that spark when their hands brushed—was a lie. Her father’s broken voice echoed: “Trust your gut, Lila.” Right now, her gut screamed that she was walking into danger, but she’d come too far to turn back. The pier was a maze of shadows, cranes looming like skeletal giants. Lila crept closer, her boots silent on the damp concrete. The scarred man’s voice carried, low and rough: “Crane’s ready to move. Project Shadow’s greenlit. Wolfe’s none the wiser.” Lila’s breath caught. Crane. Victor Crane, Wolfe’s rival CEO, the name from the Project Shadow file she’d glimpsed. Was Crane the real puppet master, not Wolfe? Her mind raced, piecing together the coded emails she’d photographed. If Crane was behind her father’s ruin, not Wolfe, her entire revenge was built on a lie.A twig snapped behind her, and Lila froze, her heart slamming against her ribs. She ducked lower, peering through a gap in the container. She could see movement of some kind, a figure, moving in the darkness, tall, wearing a familiar hoodie that couldn't really hide his brood shoulder. Dylan. Her stomach dropped. He was here, at the pier, steps from the meeting. Was he delivering the briefcase? Watching her? She gripped her recorder, her fingers trembling. She needed proof, not just of Project Shadow, but of who Dylan really was.“Lila,” a whisper cut through the dark, and she nearly yelped. Dylan’s voice, low and urgent, came from behind her. She turned, her back against the container, she could see his green eyes faintly in the little light the night provided. “What in God's name are you doing here?” he hissed, his face very close to hers. Her skipped several beats, her mind caught between fear and fury. “I should be the one asking you that,” she snapped, keeping her voice low. “You most definitely are not an accountant”His jaw tightened, but his eyes shifted to the men under the streetlamp, there were rays of panic crossing his face. “This is neither the time nor the place for questions. You need to leave. Now.”“Not until I get answers,” she said, her voice sharp. “You’re with Wolfe’s security, aren’t you? Why are you here?” The photo from Tess flashed in her mind—Dylan, or someone like him, with Wolfe’s team. Her hand were already going for her phone, ready to text Tess for backup.Dylan grabbed her wrist, his grip firm but it was still gentle. “Lila, this is way over whatever you are doing or thinking, it's not safe. Those guys are dangerous. Go.”His touch sent a spark through her, and she hated it—hated how her body betrayed her, warming to him even as her mind screamed liar. “Let go,” she said, yanking free. “I know about Project Shadow. I know you’re involved.”His eyes widened, just for a moment, before his face hardened. “You don’t know half of what you think you do,” he said, his voice low. “Stay here, and you’ll get hurt.”The scarred man’s voice rose, cutting through their whisper-fight: “Crane’s paying double to bury Wolfe. We move tonight.” Lila’s breath hitched. She needed to record this, needed to hear more. She shoved past Dylan, creeping closer to the streetlamp, her recorder on. The man in the dark coat turned, his face catching the light—Lila’s blood ran cold. She knew him. Five years ago, he’d been at her father’s office, a lawyer delivering Wolfe’s takeover papers. The same man now working for Crane.Dylan grabbed her arm again, pulling her back. “Lila, don't, just stop,” he whispered, his voice sounded desperate. “You are going to get us exposed or worse killed.”Then tell me this, her eyes blazing. “Are you really Dylan the accountant? Don't even think of lying, or you best believe on everything I hold dear I’ll scream and blow this whole thing.” Her heart still racing, caught between the need to trust him and the betrayal her head is telling her to expect. His expression went soft, and even though it was just for a moment, she saw something real, fear, maybe, or something deeper. As he was about to answer, headlights flared, locking on them in a harsh white beam. The black SUV from photo Tess sent screeched to a stop, its doors flying open. Two men in dark jackets stepped out, their faces shadowed but their intent clear. The scarred man under the streetlamp shouted, “We’ve got company!” and drew a gun.Lila’s heart stopped. She quickly grabbed Dylan by his sleeves, pulling him to the back of the container as footsteps moved closer towards them. “You did this, you set me up,” she managed a hiss, her voice still shaky.“No i did not,” he said, their eyes locked together, his, intense and pleading. “I’m the one here trying to protect you.” He held her hands and pulled her deeper into the shadows, his hand steady despite the situation they found themselves in. The warmness of his grip mixed with the cold fear in her chest, and for just a second, she wanted to believe him.The sound of a gunshot, echoing off the warehouses. Lila stifled a gasp, her recorder fell from her pocket and clattered on the ground. The scarred man's eyes caught them. “Over there!” he barked, his gun swinging in their direction.Dylan swore under his breath, pulling Lila into a sprint. They ducked between containers, the pier’s maze their only cover. Her lungs burned, her mind racing. If Dylan was with Wolfe, why was he running? If he wasn’t, who was he? The SUV’s engine roared behind them, headlights cutting through the dark. They skidded into an alley, the city’s pulse faint beyond the pier’s desolation. Dylan pressed his body against her's to a wall, shielding hers as the footsteps grew closer. “Lila,” he whispered, his breath was warm against her ear, “please just try trusting me for at least ten seconds. Please.”She could feel her heart shattering, the whole night her mind has been in conflict now she has to decide between her mission and the raw sincerity in his voice. She nodded, just barely, her body stiff from the whole pressure of the night, then he pulled her into a rusted door and the darkness swallowed them. As the door was slamming shut, her phone buzzed, a new text from Tess: I just found another photo. Dylan’s not just security. He’s with Wolfe, too close. Lila, he might BE Wolfe. Her blood froze, her eyes locking on Dylan’s in the dim light. His face was unreadable, but his hand still held hers, tight and unyielding. Was she trapped with the man she’d sworn to destroy?
