Chapter 19 : Stepping Into the World

535 Words
It was early morning in Johannesburg, and the streets shimmered with sunlight bouncing off the glass windows of downtown buildings. Naledi adjusted her backpack and took a deep breath, feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. Today was her first day helping with a small exhibition at the local art and publishing center — an opportunity she had earned through her internship. For years, she had hidden behind others’ expectations. Today, she would step into the world fully on her own terms. Kabelo walked beside her, holding two cups of coffee. “Big day, huh?” he said, grinning. Naledi smiled. “Yeah. But I think I’m ready. Finally.” Thato appeared moments later, carrying a small satchel of supplies. “Just don’t forget to breathe,” he teased, though there was pride in his voice. Inside the center, the space buzzed with artists, writers, and curious visitors. Manuscripts and artworks lined the walls, and the scent of fresh paint and paper filled the air. Naledi felt a flutter in her chest — excitement mixed with the tiniest thread of anxiety. She began helping set up displays, arranging manuscripts and guiding visitors. At first, she stumbled, forgetting a few details, but she laughed off her mistakes, realizing that growth wasn’t about perfection. It was about showing up and learning from each moment. Later, she noticed a young girl hesitating by a display of illustrated books. Naledi approached gently. “Do you like drawing?” she asked. The girl nodded shyly. “I… I want to be an artist.” Naledi smiled. “Then keep going. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s not possible. The best art comes from people who believe in themselves.” The girl’s eyes lit up, and she ran back to her friends, inspired. Naledi felt a warmth in her chest — a reflection of her own journey. At lunchtime, Kabelo and Thato joined her by the outdoor steps. “You’ve changed,” Kabelo said, handing her a sandwich. “I mean, you’ve always been talented, but now… you carry yourself differently. People notice it.” Naledi shrugged, smiling. “I’ve realized that it’s not about them noticing. It’s about me knowing who I am.” Thato nodded. “Exactly. And you’ve earned every bit of that confidence.” As the day ended, Naledi took one last look around the center. The city stretched before her, alive with possibilities. She thought about the seasons that had shaped her, the people who had stayed by her side, and the lessons that had tested her. For the first time, she felt the full weight — and the full freedom — of her own life. She wasn’t the girl who had tried to grow up too fast. She wasn’t the girl who had sought approval or feared losing love. She was herself: brave, steady, and ready to step into the world. And as the jacaranda petals drifted lazily in the late afternoon wind, Naledi knew one thing for certain: no matter where life took her next, she would walk forward with her heart open, her voice strong, and her feet firmly planted in her own truth. The seasons had taught her well. She was ready.
