Chapter 13: Cold War

The silence inside the oak storage cabinet was suffocating. Evangeline could feel every single micro-movement of Alexander’s body. His broad chest expanded against her ribs with every slow, deliberate breath he took. His long fingers remained laced tightly through the back of her waist, holding her locked against him so closely that even the soft rustle of her midnight-blue silk gown was completely silenced in the dark. Outside, heavy, aggressive footsteps paused directly on the other side of the thin wooden door. "The safe is open!" one of Kozlov’s security guards shouted from inside the main office. "The ledger is gone!" "Sweeping the perimeter!" another guard barked, his voice sharp with panic. The unmistakable click of leather holsters snapping open echoed through the room. Evangeline felt Alexander’s muscles coil beneath her palm—a silent, deadly predator preparing to burst out of cover and eliminate whoever opened the cabinet door. Her hand remained pressed flat against his broad collarbone, her mind running through tactical variables at lightning speed. If they engaged Kozlov's personal detail inside this room, the entire Vanguard Club would go on immediate lockdown. Their primary escape routes would be sealed in under thirty seconds. She didn't shift her weight, but her hand slid smoothly up to the side of Alexander’s jaw, her fingers pressing lightly against a specific pressure point beneath his ear. Wait, her touch communicated. Let me. Alexander’s piercing grey eyes flickered down to hers in the dim light filtering through the wooden slats. For a fraction of a second, he hesitated, then subtly relaxed his grip, relinquishing the lead to her. Evangeline reached into the hidden inner lining of her left dress cuff with her thumb and forefinger, sliding out a micro-device no larger than a shirt button. It was an advanced tactical sonic decoy. Without making a sound, she slipped her hand down to the narrow gap at the bottom of the cabinet door and flicked the micro-device across the floorboards. It rolled silently beneath the heavy mahogany desk on the far side of the office. Three agonizing seconds passed. BZZZZ-CLICK. A sharp, metallic pop exploded from beneath the desk, followed instantly by the artificial sound of heavy glass shattering in the adjoining private restroom. "In the bathroom! Go! Go!" the lead guard roared. Heavy combat boots pounded furiously across the hardwood floor, charging into the adjoining room to intercept a ghost. The second the main office was clear, Alexander didn't hesitate. He pushed the cabinet door open, grabbed Evangeline firmly by the wrist, and swept them out into the open room. They didn't run—running left evidence and drew unwanted eyes. Instead, they glided across the mahogany floor like shadows, slipping out into the red-carpeted hallway just as the club's main alarm system finally broke out into a deafening roar. High-pitched sirens blared from the ceiling speakers. Flashing red emergency lights bathed the crimson corridor in a dark, blood-colored pulse. "Cover state reactivated," Alexander murmured calmly, sliding his arm back around Evangeline’s waist and pulling her flush against his side as they reached the grand marble staircase. "Lose the hand, Vance," Evangeline muttered under her breath, her voice laced with sub-zero ice. Yet, she didn't fight the physical contact as they merged seamlessly into the panicking crowd of wealthy elite scrambling for the main exits. "Not until we're past the perimeter guards, sweetheart," he whispered back, putting on a worried, protective frown for the security cameras as he carefully guided his "frightened bride" through the massive glass doors and out into the cool night air of the courtyard. Ten minutes later, the chaotic sirens of the Vanguard Club had faded into a distant memory. Inside the sleek, soundproof interior of Alexander’s dark Maybach, the atmosphere was thick enough to cut with a blade. The luxury sedan glided silently down the rain-slicked highway, the streetlights casting long, rhythmic shadows across the black leather seats. Alexander sat comfortably in the front passenger side, having already discarded his tuxedo jacket onto the back row. He unbuttoned the top two buttons of his dark dress shirt, rolling his cuffs up his forearms as he rested his head against the headrest. He looked like the picture of absolute, unbothered control—an arrogant, ridiculously handsome billionaire winding down after an evening out. Evangeline sat on the opposite side, her long legs crossed, staring cold and unblinking out the tinted window. Her heels were back on, her posture rigid, her chin held high. The waist-length twist braids cascading down her back caught the faint ambient glow of the dashboard lights, framing a face that radiated enough frost to freeze a fire solid. Alexander turned his head slowly, a lazy, insufferably charming smirk pulling at the corner of his lips as he watched her. "You've been quiet for three miles, Evangeline," he observed smoothly, his baritone voice filling the quiet cabin with a low, velvet hum. "Are you still replaying our ballroom scene in your head, or are you just trying to figure out how to properly thank me for getting us out of that room alive?" Evangeline slowly turned her head toward him. Her almond-shaped dark eyes locked onto his with razor-sharp lethargy. "I am currently calculating three separate ways to execute a covert assassination without leaving DNA evidence in this vehicle," she replied, her tone flat, clinical, and completely stripped of any human warmth. Alexander let out a low, smooth laugh that vibrated softly in his chest. "Oh, come on. Don't be ungrateful. It was standard field improvisation. You needed Kozlov off our backs before he blew our identity, and I provided a bulletproof distraction. You should be complimenting my absolute dedication to the role." "Your dedication was an unauthorized breach of personal boundaries," Evangeline said smoothly, turning her full upper body to face him. She leaned forward slightly, resting her elbows on her knees, her eyes burning like twin points of cold fire in the dark car. "Let me make one thing crystal clear to you, Vance. We are forced partners on a joint syndicate operation. Nothing more. You pull a stunt like that again under the guise of 'improvisation,' and I will personally ensure your next mission is conducted from an ICU bed." Alexander’s smirk didn't fade, but his icy grey eyes darkened, stepping up to meet her intensity step for step. He leaned across the center console, bringing his face inches from hers, refusing to back down even a single millimeter. "You can put up whatever ice walls you want, Evangeline," he whispered, his voice dropping an octave, thick with a dangerous, teasing heat. "But don't lie to yourself. When I pulled you in back there, you didn't push me away. You didn't freeze up. You kissed me back." Evangeline didn't flinch. Not a single muscle in her face twitched, nor did her breathing alter its steady, deliberate rhythm. "I maintained operational compliance," she corrected instantly, her voice dangerously calm. "If I had pulled away, Kozlov’s security detail would have put a bullet in the back of our heads before we reached the corridor. It was a transaction, Alexander. A tactical move to keep us alive. Nothing more, nothing less. Your massive ego is confusing professional survival with genuine interest." She reached down into the hidden pocket of her dress, pulled out the matte-black encrypted flash drive they had stolen from Kozlov's safe, and tossed it callously into his lap. "Take the asset," she added coldly, turning her head back toward the rain-streaked window and dismissing him entirely. "The kiss meant nothing." Alexander caught the drive in his palm, his thumb brushing over the cool metal. He looked down at the tiny piece of hardware, then back up at her serene, indifferent profile. The complete wall of indifference she had just erected wasn't just impressive—it was infuriating. She had completely extinguished the lingering electricity from the ballroom, burying it beneath an unshakeable mountain of icy professionalism. And for the first time since they were assigned to this joint operation, Alexander felt a sharp spike of genuine irritation tightening in his chest. She was playing the game far too well.
