Moving Out

Both Bello and Eugenie gawked at Nyx after they heard what she said. They felt like they heard it wrong. “I’m sorry, what? Pregnant?” Eugenie asked, and Nyx nodded. “With the stranger in Bulgaria? Bello asked next, and Nyx also nodded. They leaned back, both looking at the ceiling, quiet. Nyx also leaned back, thinking about what had to do. “I’m going to be an auntie,” Bello blurted, looking dreamy, and both Eugenie and Nyx turned to him. Eugenie even arched her eyebrow at him. “Auntie? I’m the auntie. You’re the uncle,” she argued. Bello rolled his eyes and flipped his nonexistent long hair. “Please b***h. I'm too fabulous to be called uncle,” he argued back. Their bickering made Nyx giggle; that made them look at her. They sighed and hugged her from each side. “Whatever you decided on, we will be here for you,” Bello said. Eugenie nodded and added. “I know this is sudden, and you are not prepared, but you are strong, and you have people to help you, to back you up,” Nyx nodded. “Thanks, guys.” After spending time with her friends, Nyx went home. And when she stepped inside, she saw that her father had visitors. Someone she recognized as Edward’s father. Natalia was also there. She suddenly felt scared, so she froze in the middle of the hallway. When his father noticed her, he called her. “Nicola, come here.” Nyx swallowed hard and slowly moved towards the living room. “Yes, Dad?” she responded. “You were at the party the other night, right?” he asked, and she nodded. Natalia stood up, her arms crossed over her chest. “I saw her flirt with Edward,” she said, and Nyx glared at her. “Stop inventing stories. You were the one rubbing yourself against him, but he never glanced your way,” Nyx retorted, which angered her. She was about to reach out to Nyx, but Dad stopped her. “Stop the bickering!” he snapped at Natalia, and he looked at her. “Nicola, have you spoken to Edward at the party?” he asked, and she looked at him. “He just gave me a drink and joined his friends,” Nyx answered. “Liar. I saw you two spoke after he gave you a drink,” Natalia hissed. Nyx didn’t look at her and just focused on her dad. “Natalia told me they are throwing away my letters from the colleges I applied to, so I hurried out of there. Edward tried to stop me, make me stay, but I still left. That’s when I called Celestino to pick me up when I felt someone following me. I never saw Edward after I stepped out of the house. Why?” Nyx spoke. Dad ran his hands through his hair. Then Edward’s father stepped forward. “I haven’t seen my son since I left him in the house for the party,” he said. She looked at him, her heart hammering against her chest. She swallowed hard once again, guilt gnawing at her as she remembered what happened. “He could be with his friends or went out with some girl from the party,” I said, and Edward’s father shook his head. “We already asked his friends, but none of them saw him. I know my son; he always stays at home after organizing a party at home,” he replied. Then George patted his friend’s shoulder and spoke. “Don’t worry. I will help you look for him. Have you asked the police?” His friend nodded his head. “My wife is already at the station. George, I am worried about my son. He could be in trouble. He’s a troublemaker, and I fear he could have messed with the wrong person,” he said, and Nyx thought to herself that Edward indeed messed up with the wrong person. After Edward’s father left, George looked at both Natalia and Nyx. “You two. Whatever you remember about Edward, tell me. That boy could be in danger,” he said, and Nyx nodded, while Natalia huffed before nodding. Then she left them and went to my room. Nyx quickly closed the door behind her and started arranging her things. She gathered the most important ones, including the bank card where she saved all the money from all her part-time jobs, and packed them in a shopping tote, and placed it behind her dresser. Then she started sorting through her clothes. The new ones she had bought were the ones she started packing in her backpack. She doesn’t have many things, but she still thinks she has a lot to me. After organizing her things, she went downstairs and started preparing dinner. She acted like nothing was wrong, like she wasn’t being bothered by the guilt of killing Edward. While eating dinner, Elaine started talking about a vacation in Paris. Natalia cheered, clearly excited for the trip. George then turned to Nyx. “Which school are you going to?” he asked. Nyx paused and looked at him. Elaine scoffed. “School? She didn’t even get into the schools she applied to,” she said, and Nyx looked at her. “What?!” George exclaimed. “How did you know I didn’t get into those schools?” Nyx asked, and before Elaine could speak, Nyx continued. “It seems like Natalia was right. You did mess with my letters.” Elaine opened and closed her mouth, but no words came out. George looked at his wife. “Elaine, what is she talking about?” he asked, and Elaine shook her head. “Don’t mind her, Daddy. Nicola is just sour she didn’t get into those schools she applied to. She’s not that smart after all,” Natalia snickered, and Nyx scoffed before looking at her father. “I got into King's College London,” she said. Both Elaine and Natalia looked at her, surprised. “The letters you must have seen are the backup schools I applied to. The real goal, the school I really wanted to go to, its admission letter came weeks ago. It's just safely in Eugenie’s desk. I know some people would try to mess with my letters, so I got smart,” she said, smugly looking at the mother and daughter. George nodded his head, impressed. “That is a good school, but we don’t have money for that. Why don’t you go to a community college instead,” he said. Nyx looked at her father and smiled. “You don’t have the money for my education, but you're going to Paris,” she said, and George clenched his jaw. “You have no money, but my mother does,” she said, and George paused. “What does that mean?” Elaine asked, and she looked at her, at George, and at Natalia. “She left me a trust fund. Celestino also said she left me a couple of properties already under my name so you can have this tiny house. I’ll move out.” George then slammed his hand on the table. “What nonsense are you talking about?!” he spat, and then Elaine snickered. “What trust fund are you even talking about? Your mother was just relying on your father,” she said. Nyx just smiled at her. “Didn’t you know? My mother was a lawyer, a senior partner. She made all the money. Why do you think we live in this house? My mom had the money, not dad,” she said, taunting Elaine. George once again slammed his hand on the table. “What your mother made was conjugal. What’s hers is mine. You are not moving out. I am your father, so you stay here,” he hissed. Nyx looked at her father. “I’m eighteen, Dad, and will soon start college. I will be moving out soon, so you should start learning how to do house chores,” she said, focusing on her food. George was seething, while Elaine was confused. She thought Niana had no money, and it was George who earned more. After dinner, Nyx cleaned up and started washing the dishes. As she wiped them dry, Natalia approached her. “If you move out, where will you go?” she asked, leaning against the counter. “My mother has several properties aside from this house. Maybe in one of those. If you like this tiny house, it's all yours. My parting gift to your family,” Nyx answered as she finished wiping the plates. She was about to leave when Natalia grabbed her arm. “You’re just going to your sugar daddy,” Natalia hissed, and Nyx smirked. “Of course, you’d know about sugar daddy and stuff,” she teased her before pulling her arm from her grip and walking away. Natalia snarled, stomping her foot. She was jealous. She thought George had the money because he’s a dentist, but it looks like it doesn’t seem that way. ********************************. The next day, while everyone was out for the day, Nyx grabbed the shopping tote and brought it to Eugenie’s place. “I wish to keep my stuff here for now,” she told her best friend. “Why? Are you running away?” she asked. Nyx smiled. “I decided to move out, but I need to get my stuff little by little so they won’t do anything. And I don’t want to stay there and let them find out my situation. This bag contains everything that is important to me. Mostly documents and my bank card,” she told Eugenie, who smiled at her. “Finally! I am so glad you are finally leaving that house, but where are you going now? Where will you stay?” She asked, and Nyx let out a peaceful sigh. “Well, for now… Celestino offered for me to stay with him for the meantime. He also offered to help me with the baby. He volunteered to be the grandpa,” she answered. Eugenie smiled warmly at her best friend. “I am glad you finally found the courage to free yourself from that hell. We are ready to face our new life in college,” she said, and Nyx nodded. Eugenie stood up and huffed. “Well, we should start hauling your stuff away from that place. My dad’s car is out upfront; I have the keys.” So, Eugenie and Nyx went back to her house to get the bags she packed the night before. “Are you sure you’re just going to take this stuff?” Eugenie asked. Nyx looked at her backpack and the rest of her stuff in the room. “Should I pack more?” Nyx asked back, while Eugenie was rummaging through her closet. “Your books and other things your mom left you. Let’s get them out of here. Your shoes too,” she said, and Nyx nodded. She helped her pack and haul them into the car. Soon, the only things left in her room were a few magazines, a few old clothes, and shoes. While fixing the boxes in the closet, Eugenie remembered something. “By the way, have you heard? Edward was missing.” Nyx froze. “Uhm, yeah. His dad was here yesterday. He was worried about him,” Nyx said softly. Eugenie plopped on the edge of the bed after closing the closet door. “I wonder where he went. At the party, I saw him follow you,” Eugenie said, and Nyx whipped her head towards her. “What?” Eugenie grabbed her hand and pulled her down the bed. “When you left the party, Bello and I followed you after we got back on Natalia. But I swear I saw Edward follow you into the woods,” she said, and Nyx went rigid. Her heartbeat was loud and fast, so she thought her heart would jump out of her chest. “D-Did you s-see him after t-that?” Nyx asked nervously, even stuttering as she spoke. Eugenie shook her head and answered. “Bello and I called the cab to go to your house, but we knew you were not there because your room is still dark.” Eugenie looked at Nyx intently. She noticed how troubled her friend was. “Nyx, are you okay? You look rather pale.” Nyx looked down at her hands on her lap and swallowed hard. “I felt like someone was following me in the woods that night. That’s why I called Celestino to pick me up. I was so scared that time,” she explained. “You think it's Edward?” Eugenie asked, and Nyx shrugged. “I don’t know,”
