Chapter 2

I turned and left without looking back. Only when I was out of sight did they finally breathe. I found a hotel nearby and checked in. I lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling while the bright light burned my eyes. One thought kept haunting me. 'Why Yolanda of all people?' We had both grown up in an orphanage. I had always been small and weak as a child. Whenever others picked on me, I never had the courage to fight back. Yolanda stood in front of me every time. When she first learned I was getting married, she cried and held my hand. "Emmy, I won't be there to protect you forever. You have to learn how to protect yourself." After that, I tried to be like her. I became my own armor, protecting Jack and holding our marriage together. But in the end, she was the one who broke it apart. She also stole my son from me. Maybe I was never her match. I should've moved on. They were married now, and she was about to have a baby. I should've been able to let go. But I still hated her. I hated her for lying to me so cruelly. I eventually forced myself to fall asleep. A loud knock on the door woke me. Charlie stood outside, his face full of anger. "Emma, after two years, you haven't changed at all. You actually tried to hurt the baby in Yola's womb?" Before I could even respond, the package in his hand flew at me. Several bloodstained baby chicks tumbled out and landed near my feet. I froze. "Do you know you almost made Yola go into early labor? How much do you hate her?" Charlie looked like he was about to explode. Back then, when I found out his assistant was pregnant, I had completely broken down. Yolanda was the one who caught those baby chicks, chopped off their heads herself, and packed them into a box. "Send these to that woman. It'll scare the baby right out of her." After that, Charlie had come after me in rage and locked both Jack and me in the basement. Looking back now, every disaster had been carefully arranged by Yolanda. She was afraid I would come back and take Charlie away from her. But now, the only thing I felt toward him was hatred. The last piece of pride I had left forced me to ask, "Charlie, don't I have the right to hate her? She destroyed my family. She was the other woman. If she was scared into early labor, she brought it on herself!" "Shut up!" He slapped me. "Emma, you're the other woman now. Why did you come back? We're already divorced. You forced your way back in. What are you trying to get from us?" I raised my hand to hit him back, but his bodyguards grabbed my arms and held me down. I locked eyes with him and said every word through my teeth. "My only goal is to see both of you die. Only your deaths can make up for everything I've suffered!" He dragged me away again and threw me into the basement. Again, it was because of Yolanda. "Until Yola gives birth, you're staying here!" The moment the door closed behind me, the terror I had been holding back finally shattered my resolve. I begged him, "Charlie, I have claustrophobia. Don't lock me in here! I didn't send those things. It was Yolanda. Don't believe her lies!" A mocking smile appeared on his face. "Emma, are you saying Yola framed you? I found those things myself. She didn't even know about them! Before I left, she told me to take good care of you and make it up to you. I never thought you would turn around and accuse her. You make me sick. Stay here and reflect on what you've done!" He turned around. The iron door slammed shut, cutting me off from the outside world completely. The man who once swore he would love me and protect me had thrown me into the darkness once again.
