Chapter 4

693 Words
When I opened my eyes, I was lying in a hospital bed. I heard that Charlie had carried me here. I also heard Yolanda had given birth. She came to see me, holding the baby in her arms. "Emmy, look at her. Her nose looks like mine, but the rest of her looks exactly like Chaz." For a brief moment, I almost saw the old Yolanda—the girl who used to share every little secret and every bit of happiness with me. But I didn't want to see her anymore. I turned away. "Get out." Her expression shifted. "If my daughter enters this world without your blessing, then maybe she shouldn't have been born at all." The moment she finished speaking, a baby's cry rang out. I turned and saw her hand covering the baby's mouth and nose. Her eyes glistened with tears. The baby's cries rattled me. "What are you doing?" I stared at her, confused. A furious voice came from the doorway. "Stop it!" Charlie rushed over and took the baby from her. Jack followed him inside and started hitting me with his fists. "You bad Mommy! Why did you hurt my sister? Why didn't you die in there? Why did you wake up?" At that moment, I realized I couldn't feel pain anymore. My heart had already gone numb. Charlie looked at me with murder in his eyes. "Emma, I shouldn't have let you out of that place. I never thought you would become this cruel. You actually tried to hurt a newborn baby. Didn't you say you were sick? Fine. I'll send you somewhere that can fix you." As soon as he finished speaking, several bodyguards stormed in. This time, he sent me to a private rehabilitation facility. The doctors and nurses there refused to talk to me unless they had to. If my voice rose even a little, they injected me with sedatives. Their only answer was always the same. "This is Mr. Brook's order." I tried to escape. But every single time, I was found and dragged back. A month passed. Then Yolanda came. "Today is my daughter's first month celebration. You're invited." I looked up at her. I knew she wasn't here out of kindness—she was scheming something. "Yolanda, I've already stepped aside. You don't need to keep pretending. Tell Charlie to let me go. I won't interfere again." She laughed. "But Chaz doesn't think so. After he rescued you from the basement that day, I saw him sitting beside your hospital bed. I saw the way he looked at you. That kind of thing can't be faked. I never thought after two years, you would learn to play the victim and use sympathy to win him back." Before she could finish, I grabbed the blade beside me and pressed it against her neck. "Let me go." My voice was cold. The nurses panicked. Charlie rushed over. "Emma, don't hurt her. Tell me what you want!" His voice trembled with fear. He was terrified that I would hurt Yolanda the same way I had hurt his assistant. "Let me leave." I pressed the blade tighter. A thin streak of blood appeared on Yolanda's neck. "Fine!" The panic in Charlie's eyes was impossible to hide. His voice dropped into a desperate plea. "Don't do anything you'll regret!" I forced Yolanda downstairs and shoved her away at the entrance. Then I ran. I ran as fast as I could—but I couldn't escape. The bodyguards caught me and dragged me back. Behind the iron bars, Charlie held Yolanda in his arms, comforting her like she was the only person in the world who mattered. When he looked at me, his eyes were filled with disgust. "Emma, you're dangerous. I won't let you leave. Locking you here is the only way to protect Yola." He didn't love me—yet he refused to set me free. At that moment, I stopped begging. I slowly raised the blade to my neck. Right in front of him, I pressed down and dragged it across my throat. "Charlie, I hope we never meet again in our next life."
