Chapter 8: The New Rival

952 Words
The forest hadn’t calmed. Even after she left. The air still carried her presence. Heavy. Dominating. Unforgettable. Alpha Kael stood frozen, his eyes locked on the empty space where she had disappeared. His chest felt tight. Unstable. Like something had slipped out of his control— Something important. “Alpha…” Ronan’s voice came carefully. Kael didn’t respond. His wolf was restless. Agitated. We lost her again. His jaw clenched. “I know,” he muttered. Behind him, the warriors shifted uneasily. No one spoke. Because what they had just witnessed… Didn’t make sense. “That wasn’t normal,” Ronan said quietly. Kael’s eyes darkened. “I can see that.” “That power…” Ronan hesitated. “It didn’t feel like any wolf I’ve ever encountered.” Silence. Then— A voice cut through the tension. “Because she isn’t.” Every head turned instantly. The air shifted again. But this time— It wasn’t her. It was something else. Something equally dangerous. From the shadows, a man stepped forward. Tall. Commanding. Dressed in dark, fitted clothing that carried the scent of another territory. Another pack. But stronger. More controlled. His eyes glowed faintly as he stopped just at the edge of the clearing. Watching. Observing. Unbothered. Kael’s posture straightened instantly. Dominance radiated from him. “State your name,” he ordered coldly. The stranger’s lips curved slightly. “Relax,” he said smoothly. “If I wanted a fight, you’d already be on the ground.” The warriors growled in response. But Kael raised a hand. Stopping them. His gaze sharpened. “You’re trespassing.” “Am I?” the man replied calmly. “Or did I just arrive before you realized what you’ve lost?” Silence. The tension thickened. Kael took a slow step forward. Dangerous. Controlled. “Speak clearly,” he said. The man’s eyes flickered toward the direction she had gone. “She’s not yours anymore.” The words landed like a strike. Kael’s wolf snarled violently. Mine. His fists clenched. “She was never yours to begin with,” Kael shot back. A soft chuckle escaped the stranger. “That’s where you’re wrong.” The air grew colder. Ronan stepped forward slightly. “My Alpha—” “Stay back,” Kael ordered without looking. His eyes never left the stranger. “Who are you?” Kael asked again. This time— The man answered. “Alpha Draven.” The name settled heavily in the air. Even the warriors reacted. Because they knew it. A powerful Alpha. A dangerous one. A ruler of a territory known for strength and control. Kael’s expression didn’t change. But his instincts sharpened instantly. “What do you want, Draven?” he asked. Draven’s gaze returned to him. Calm. Confident. Certain. “I came for her.” Silence. Complete. Total. Even the wind seemed to stop. Kael’s chest tightened. “You don’t even know what she is,” he said coldly. Draven’s lips curved slightly. “Oh… I know exactly what she is.” A pause. Then— “And that’s why I’m here.” Something inside Kael snapped. “You think you can walk into my territory and claim what belongs to me?” His aura surged instantly. Dominant. Threatening. Deadly. But Draven didn’t react. Didn’t flinch. Didn’t step back. Instead— He smiled. “She doesn’t belong to you.” The words were calm. But absolute. Final. Kael’s wolf roared inside him. Fight him. The ground beneath Kael’s feet cracked slightly as his control slipped. “You’re testing my patience,” Kael warned. Draven stepped closer. Just one step. But it was enough. Enough to show— He wasn’t intimidated. “Then maybe you should ask yourself something,” Draven said quietly. Kael’s eyes narrowed. “What?” Draven’s gaze darkened slightly. “Why did she walk away from you… without looking back?” Silence. The question hit deeper than any attack. Because Kael knew the answer. He just didn’t want to admit it. Draven continued— “You rejected her.” Each word was slow. Intentional. “And now you want her back?” Kael didn’t respond. Because for the first time— He couldn’t. Draven’s eyes flickered toward the forest again. “She’s changing,” he said. “And when she fully awakens…” A faint, dangerous smile appeared on his lips. “She won’t kneel to anyone.” The words sent a strange tension through the air. Even Kael felt it. That truth. That warning. His voice dropped lower. “…and you think she’ll choose you?” Draven’s gaze returned to him. Sharp. Confident. “No.” A pause. Then— “I know she will.” The challenge was clear now. Not hidden. Not subtle. Direct. Two Alphas. One woman. One power. The atmosphere cracked under the pressure. Kael stepped forward. Their auras collided instantly. Dominance. Power. Control. Clashing violently in the air between them. “You’re not taking her,” Kael said. Draven’s expression didn’t change. “We’ll see.” A long silence followed. Then— Draven turned. As if the conversation was already over. “Enjoy your regret, Kael,” he said without looking back. “And prepare yourself.” Kael’s eyes darkened. “For what?” Draven stopped briefly. Just enough to say— “For the moment she realizes…” His voice dropped. “…you were never worthy of her.” And with that— He disappeared into the forest. Leaving behind tension. Silence. And a storm that was only just beginning. Kael stood there, unmoving. His chest rising slowly. His wolf restless. Unstable. Because now— It wasn’t just about finding her. It was about losing her. To someone else.
