Chapter 2: Broken and Banished

891 Words
The forest was silent. Too silent. Each step I took echoed louder than it should, like the world itself was reminding me that I no longer belonged anywhere. Not in the pack. Not with him. Not even with myself. My chest ached with every breath, the pain of the broken bond still tearing through me like invisible claws. I pressed my hand against my heart, gasping softly. It still hurt. It wouldn’t stop hurting. “Keep walking…” I whispered to myself. Because if I stopped… I knew I would collapse. The night air was cold, biting against my skin as I moved deeper into the forest. The glowing lights of the pack were long gone now, swallowed by darkness. Good. I didn’t want to see them again. Didn’t want to hear their laughter. Didn’t want to remember the way he looked at me… Like I was nothing. A tear slid down my cheek. I quickly wiped it away. “No more crying,” I muttered. But my voice trembled. Because I knew I was lying. My legs were getting weaker with each step. My body felt heavy, like it no longer belonged to me. Even my wolf… She was quiet. Too quiet. “Say something…” I whispered inside my mind. Nothing. No response. No warmth. No presence. Panic rose in my chest. “No… no, no, no…” My breathing became uneven as fear wrapped around me. The rejection… It didn’t just break the bond. It damaged my wolf. “I’m here,” I said desperately. “Please… don’t leave me too…” Still nothing. The silence inside me was worse than the pain. Because it meant I was truly alone. A broken laugh escaped my lips. “Rejected… abandoned… and now… empty…” My knees buckled suddenly, and I dropped to the ground. The cold earth didn’t comfort me. It only reminded me of how far I had fallen. “I can’t do this…” I whispered weakly. The strength I had left was slipping away fast. Hunger clawed at my stomach. Exhaustion blurred my vision. Pain consumed everything. Maybe… Maybe this was how it ends. Alone. Forgotten. Unwanted. A bitter smile formed on my lips. “How fitting…” The wind howled softly through the trees, carrying a strange chill with it. For a moment… I thought I heard something. A low sound. A growl? My body stiffened. Slowly, I lifted my head. The forest felt different now. Heavier. Darker. Watching. My heart started racing again. Not from pain this time— But from instinct. Danger. I forced myself to stand, my legs shaking violently beneath me. “Not here…” I whispered. “Not like this…” A shadow moved between the trees. Then another. My breath caught in my throat. Eyes. Glowing eyes. They appeared one by one in the darkness. Watching me. Hunting me. Fear gripped me tightly. Without my wolf… without my strength… I was nothing but prey. I stumbled backward, my heart pounding wildly. “Stay away…” I warned, though my voice was barely above a whisper. A low growl answered me. Closer this time. My back hit a tree. No escape. No strength. No hope. The first wolf stepped into the faint moonlight. Huge. Terrifying. Its eyes locked onto mine with hunger. I squeezed my eyes shut for a second, bracing myself. “So this is how I die…” A tear slipped down my face. Rejected by my mate… Only to be devoured like nothing. I let out a shaky breath. “If you’re going to kill me… then do it…” The growling stopped. Silence fell again. Strange. Slowly… I opened my eyes. The wolves were still there. But they weren’t moving. They weren’t attacking. They were… Backing away? Confusion flickered through me. “What…?” A sudden chill ran down my spine. The air shifted. Something powerful. Something ancient. Something far more dangerous than the wolves… Was here. The wolves lowered their heads, whimpering softly before retreating into the darkness. Leaving me alone. My heart pounded harder. Not from fear of them anymore— But from whatever had just arrived. A soft glow appeared behind me. I froze. I could feel it. Watching me. Waiting. Slowly… I turned around. And my breath stopped. A figure stood in the shadows. Tall. Still. Surrounded by a faint, eerie light. I couldn’t see their face clearly. But I could feel their power. It pressed down on me, heavy and overwhelming. Not like Alpha Kael. No… This was something else entirely. Something older. Something… not normal. My voice came out as a whisper. “Who… are you…?” The figure didn’t answer. Instead— It stepped closer. And the moment it did… My wolf—silent, broken, gone— Suddenly stirred. A faint voice echoed inside me. Weak. But alive. “…mate…” My eyes widened in shock. “No…” I breathed. That wasn’t possible. I had already been rejected. I shouldn’t— I couldn’t— Feel this again. The figure stopped just a few steps away from me. Close enough now that I could feel the heat of their presence. Close enough that everything inside me trembled. And then— A voice. Deep. Calm. Dangerous. “You survived.” My breath hitched. “I’ve been waiting for you.”
