Chapter 3: The Hidden Power

1067 Words
The air around me grew heavy. Too heavy. Like the forest itself was holding its breath. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t think. All I could do… was stare. The figure stood before me, cloaked in shadows, yet glowing faintly with an unnatural light. The closer they stepped, the more my body reacted—every nerve alive, every instinct screaming. Run. But I couldn’t. Because something inside me… Didn’t want to. “You survived.” The voice echoed again, low and calm, yet carrying a power that made my knees weak. “I’ve been waiting for you.” My throat felt dry. Waiting? For me? “I… I don’t understand,” I whispered, my voice barely steady. “Who are you?” The figure stopped just a few steps away. For a moment, silence stretched between us. Then slowly… the shadows shifted. Moonlight broke through the trees, revealing part of their face. My breath caught. Not human. Not entirely wolf. Something… more. Their eyes glowed—deep, ancient, and filled with something I couldn’t name. Power. Old power. The kind that didn’t belong in this world. “You feel it,” they said quietly. It wasn’t a question. My hand instinctively moved to my chest. To my heart. To the place where my bond had shattered. But now… There was something else. A faint warmth. A weak pulse. “No…” I shook my head quickly. “That’s not possible. My mate rejected me. The bond is gone.” “Is it?” The question sent a chill down my spine. Before I could respond, they stepped closer. Too close. I should have backed away. I should have been afraid. But instead… I stood still. Frozen under their gaze. “Tell me,” they murmured, their voice softer now. “What do you feel?” I hesitated. Then slowly… I closed my eyes. At first, there was nothing. Just pain. Just emptiness. But then— A flicker. A small, fragile spark. It pulsed weakly inside me. Alive. My breath hitched. “I… I feel something…” I whispered. “Good.” When I opened my eyes again, they were watching me closely. “Because that means it’s waking up.” My heart skipped. “What is?” They didn’t answer immediately. Instead, they lifted a hand and pointed toward my chest. “Your true power.” I let out a shaky laugh. “Power?” I repeated bitterly. “You’re mistaken. I don’t have any power. I’m the weakest in my pack. That’s why I was rejected.” The words tasted like poison. But they were true. They had always been true. The figure tilted their head slightly, studying me. “Is that what they told you?” I frowned. “That’s what I’ve always been.” “No,” they said calmly. “That’s what you were made to believe.” Something about the way they said it made my chest tighten. Confusion. Doubt. Hope. All tangled together. “I don’t understand…” “You don’t need to. Not yet.” Before I could react, they stepped even closer. So close I could feel their breath. So close my heart started racing uncontrollably. “Your power has been sealed for a long time,” they continued. “Hidden. Suppressed.” My eyes widened. “Sealed?” “Yes.” A strange sensation spread through my body. Warm. Then hot. Then— Burning. I gasped, clutching my chest as the feeling intensified. “What’s happening to me?” I cried out. “It’s awakening.” The calmness in their voice didn’t match the chaos inside me. Pain surged through my veins, sharp and overwhelming. I dropped to my knees, my body trembling violently. “I can’t—” I choked. “It hurts—!” “Of course it does,” they said quietly. “You’ve been asleep your whole life.” The burning spread. Through my chest. My arms. My entire body. It felt like something inside me was breaking apart— And rebuilding at the same time. My vision blurred. My breathing became uneven. “I’m… dying…” I whispered weakly. “No,” they replied. A pause. Then— “You’re becoming.” Something inside me snapped. A sudden burst of energy exploded from within, forcing a scream from my lips. My eyes flew open— And for a brief moment— Everything changed. The world around me sharpened. The sounds became clearer. The air… alive. I could feel everything. The trees. The wind. The earth beneath me. Even the distant heartbeat of creatures hidden in the forest. Power surged through me like lightning. Wild. Uncontrolled. Terrifying. And then— Just as suddenly— It vanished. I collapsed forward, breathing heavily, my body weak again. But different. Something had changed. I could feel it. Even in my exhaustion. Even in my confusion. Slowly… I lifted my head. The figure was still there, watching me. Silent. Patient. “What… was that?” I whispered. “A glimpse,” they answered. “Of what you truly are.” My heart pounded. “What I am…?” They turned slightly, their glowing eyes meeting mine once more. “Something far more dangerous than an Alpha.” A chill ran down my spine. Dangerous? Me? That was impossible. And yet… I remembered the power. The feeling. The way the world had bent around me for a second. It wasn’t imagination. It was real. “I don’t understand any of this…” I admitted quietly. “You will.” They began to step back into the shadows. “Wait!” I called out quickly, panic rising again. “Don’t leave. I need answers!” They paused. But didn’t turn back. “Find me when you’re ready.” My chest tightened. “How?!” Silence. Then— A final whisper carried by the wind: “When your power calls… I will come.” And just like that— They were gone. The forest fell silent again. Leaving me alone. But not the same. Not broken. Not empty. Not weak. I slowly looked down at my hands, still trembling. Something inside me stirred again. Not pain. Not fear. But something else. Something new. Something powerful. And for the first time since that night… I didn’t feel like prey. I felt like something else entirely. Something that even the Alpha… Should fear.
