Chapter 16 — Something Changes

The change was so gradual that neither of them noticed it at first. It started with small things. A glass of water waiting on Mia's bedside table when she forgot to bring one upstairs. She would wake in the middle of the night, throat dry and body heavy with the exhaustion of early pregnancy, and find the glass already there, cool and full, as if someone had anticipated her need before she even felt it. The first time it happened, she assumed one of the staff had done it. The second time, she wasn't so sure. A blanket draped over her shoulders when she fell asleep reading in the library. She had been curled up in one of the leather armchairs, a book open on her lap, when sleep had overtaken her.
