Officer Bill Richards sat behind the wheel of his police cruiser, snacking on smoked walnuts. The evening had started out busy but had quieted down after 1 am. He hoped it would stay this way for another 20 minutes until his shift was over. “Three-eight and three-nine,” the voice on the radio said. As he reached for his radio, he heard Donna Kerney’s voice reply, “Three-nine.” Responding as well, Bill said into the microphone, “Three-eight.” “Three-eight and three-nine, possible home invasion in progress, 1126 Grove Street, just south of Pinewood. Caller reports seeing someone in the yard, and the back door has been forced open.” Both responding officers acknowledged the instructions and, with emergency lights activated, raced to the scene, approaching from different directions.
