Chapter 26
Evan ran as fast as possible, aware that the short female detective was behind him. He shouted a final taunt in her direction and heard two gunshots. Neither hit him, but he saw a chunk of wood blasted off the side of a telephone pole he passed. The near miss caused him to stumble, and he felt sutures in his side rip free. He yelped in pain but noticed he no longer heard the footsteps pursuing him.
Glancing over his shoulder, Evan saw her running back to her partner, the man who’d called him a coward in the article. He’d collapsed to the ground, and Evan smiled, knowing what the dose of carfentanil was doing. He also knew he wasn’t in the clear yet. There’d soon be many more officers chasing him down.
