Chapter 15 : The King's Ultimatum

1293 Words
The war room roared with silence. Thick stone walls lined with ancient banners muffled the storm raging outside, but inside the fortress, a tempest of another kind brewed. The heavy double doors groaned shut behind Lucien, and every wolf in the chamber froze. The Lycan King’s presence was enough to silence air itself. His golden eyes swept across the room like firelight catching dry wood. Serena stood near the far end, flanked by her companion Nyra, whose eyes scanned the war council with the wary stillness of a seasoned hunter. Beside the table, Kael leaned lazily against a pillar, his face unreadable. Lucien’s jaw was set, and the wild pulse of anger in his aura made the flames in the sconces flicker. “I want names,” Lucien growled, voice deep, rough, and absolute. “Who gave the order to send scouts into rogue territory without my seal?” No one spoke. The commanders avoided his gaze. Some glanced toward Kael. Others stared at the war maps, praying for invisibility. Kael raised a brow, uncrossing his arms with deliberate calm. “Perhaps someone acted out of… ambition,” he drawled. “Eager to prove themselves.” Lucien turned on him. “Ambition without sanction is disobedience. And disobedience is betrayal.” Kael gave a lazy smile. “So it is, brother.” The tension crackled like lightning ready to strike. Serena stepped forward, her eyes fixed on Lucien, not flinching beneath his storm. “This wasn’t just a mission gone rogue,” she said. “The intruders weren’t random scouts. They came for me.” The room collectively stiffened. Lucien’s gaze sharpened, fury sharpening into focus. “What?” “They knew where I was training,” Serena continued. “They had silver-tipped arrows. And wolfsbane in their blades. They were prepared , too prepared.” Nyra nodded grimly. “It was an ambush, not a border violation.” A low growl erupted from Lucien’s throat. He stalked to the table and slammed a fist onto the map, causing ink bottles to rattle. “Then we have a traitor in our midst.” “Or more than one,” Nyra added under her breath. Kael’s eyes glittered. “Maybe our enemies know your heart better than your court does.” Lucien turned slowly to Serena. His face, usually carved from stone, softened just slightly at the edges. “Are you hurt?” “No,” she answered. “But I had to use… more than I wanted to.” Lucien’s eyes narrowed. “You used your Moonblood.” “A little,” Serena admitted. “I didn’t mean to. It reacted on its own. It felt like something ancient inside me cracked open.” A charged silence followed. Even the fire in the sconces seemed to bend toward her. Kael stepped closer, gaze thoughtful. “Your power is awakening faster than expected. That makes you dangerous and vulnerable.” Lucien’s fist clenched. “From this moment on, Serena does not leave the stronghold without my protection. No exceptions.” “I don’t need protection,” she said, voice sharp. Lucien's tone dropped. “That wasn’t a request.” “You’re caging me.” “I’m keeping you alive.” “And what life is that?” she snapped. “Watched. Restricted. Obeying your orders like some porcelain pawn in a glass case?” Lucien strode toward her. “You are not a pawn. You are my mate.” His voice echoed with power. Even Kael tensed at the force of it. “You carry the bloodline that could determine the fate of our world,” Lucien continued, voice thick with restrained emotion. “That makes you a target and mine to protect.” Serena met his gaze with equal heat. “Then stop treating me like a weakline” Silence fell. And then Kael laughed. “Well. The moon goddess certainly gifted you a storm of a mate.” Lucien didn’t look away from Serena. “You want to fight?” “Yes.” “You want to control your power?” She nodded. “Before it controls me.” Lucien’s jaw worked, emotion flashing behind his gold-flecked eyes. “Fine. You’ll train with me. Every morning. But no disobedience. No sneaking away.” She held his gaze. “Deal.” Kael smirked. “I might start waking early just to watch.” --- That night, the corridors of the fortress fell quiet, shadows stretching long under the pale moonlight. Serena stood on the balcony outside her chambers, the chill of the wind brushing her skin. The stars shimmered above the pines, distant and cold. She could still feel the hum of the Moonblood beneath her skin. Not just a hum current. Something deep, wild, and waiting. Lucien’s voice startled her from behind. “You should be resting.” She turned, startled. “You move like a ghost.” “I am a King. I move as I please.” She offered him a small smile. “And yet you still check on me.” He stepped closer. “I couldn’t sleep.” They stood in silence for a moment. The moonlight painted silver against his cheekbones, made the sharp lines of his jaw look carved by gods. “You were right,” he said finally. Serena turned toward him, surprised. “About what?” “About you not belonging in a cage. You’re not a delicate flower. You’re… something else.” “What am I then?” she asked softly. Lucien didn’t answer immediately. “A storm in wolf’s skin.” Her heart beat faster. “You said your power responded on its own,” he murmured. “What did it feel like?” She hesitated. “Like a dam breaking. Cold and ancient and loud. But… not evil. Just wild.” Lucien frowned. “We need to train it. If it grows too fast, you’ll burn from the inside out. And if Calista gets even a whisper of it—” “She won’t,” Serena cut in. “She’ll never touch me.” Lucien reached out, brushing his fingers lightly down her arm. “She won’t. Because I will kill anyone who tries.” Their eyes locked. The air was thick—too thick. Something between them hovered on the edge of a kiss, a surrender, a promise not yet made. But before either of them could speak, a loud howl echoed from the western towers. Lucien stiffened instantly. A second howl followed, lower, more desperate. A third—the warning cry. Lucien turned, barked, “Stay here.” “No,” Serena said, grabbing her cloak. “I’m coming.” Lucien didn’t argue this time. --- They stormed through the corridors. Guards ran toward the outer gates. The scent of smoke filled the hall. As they burst into the southern watchtower, a soldier dropped to one knee. “My King. The wards on the eastern border… they’ve been breached.” Lucien’s eyes glowed. “How many?” “Too many to count. Shadowbeasts. Wraiths. Something… something not natural.” Nyra ran in, panting. “I felt it. Dark magic.” Lucien growled, turning to his brother. “Kael! Sound the full moonhorn.” But Kael didn’t respond. Lucien’s eyes narrowed. “Where is he?” --- Miles away, in the blackness of the forest beyond the warded border, Kael stood in the moonlight, watching as shadows swirled around him. Beside him stood a woman cloaked in midnight flame. Queen Calista. “Your brother will never suspect,” she whispered, curling a clawed finger under Kael’s chin. “Are you ready to fulfill your true destiny, Kael Nightborne?” Kael’s lips curled. “Let’s burn his kingdom to the ground.”
