Okinawa, Japan The island of Okinawa is one of the islands that make up the archipelago known as the Nation of Japan. The Island is famously home to America's naval military bases in the Indo-Pacific region. During the second world war, Okinawa was the site of fierce battle which spread to involve the general population. The war caused great harm to the natives of Okinawa and their culture. In the aftermath of the Hiroshima nuclear bombing, the empire of Japan surrendered thereby bring the war to a close, and Okinawa was ceded to the Americans. The Americans went on to build their bases all over the Island. On the 15th of May 1972, Okinawa reverted to Japan.
