The Chief of Police, Nate Johns, grimly surveyed the crowded conference room as he approached the podium where he was to speak from. The assorted members of the regional press were all glaring at him, their pens and styluses poised to take notes. A few held voice recorders close to their mouths as they mumbled details to be written later, but Chief Johns tried to ignore everything but the notebook on the podium in front of him as he squared himself up to the microphone.
