Chapter 4 Between Life and Death

904 Words
(Selena’s POV) When I opened my eyes again, everything was blurry. The world moved like smoke , shadows dancing, sounds echoing far away. My body felt heavy, my head light. The smell of blood was still strong in the air, but the growls were gone. It took me a moment to remember. The rogues. The fight. The black wolf. I blinked, trying to focus. The ground beneath me was cold and wet. The night sky above was fading to gray. Dawn. Mira’s weak voice whispered inside me. “We’re alive…” “Barely,” I whispered back. I tried to move, but pain exploded across my side. I gasped. There were deep claw marks on my ribs. My fur was soaked in red. Then I remembered the wolf , the huge black one with silver eyes. I turned my head slowly. He was still there. He stood a few steps away, watching me. His fur glistened with blood that wasn’t his own. The rogues’ bodies lay scattered around him. He looked terrifying and beautiful at the same time. He was bigger than any wolf I’d ever seen , even larger than Zade in his wolf form. His aura was strong, so strong that even in my pain, I felt the urge to bow my head. But when he looked at me, his eyes softened. “Don’t be afraid,” his voice rumbled inside my head. His tone was deep, but calm , the voice of an Alpha used to being obeyed. I blinked. He’s mind-linking me? But that wasn’t possible. He wasn’t from my pack. “Who are you?” I asked weakly, my thoughts trembling. He didn’t answer right away. He walked closer, slow and careful, until he stood over me. He lowered his head and sniffed near my neck. I tensed, but he didn’t attack. His silver eyes studied me. “You’re hurt.” I tried to laugh, but it came out as a cough. “I noticed.” He tilted his head slightly, as if amused by my courage. “You shouldn’t be out here alone.” “I didn’t plan to be,” I whispered. “I just… ran.” “From your pack?” I swallowed. My throat felt dry. “From everything.” For a moment, he said nothing. Only the sound of the wind moving through the trees. Then he asked softly, “Why do you smell like pain?” That question broke something in me. My eyes filled with tears. “Because my mate rejected me,” I whispered. His eyes flickered , just for a second , with something dark. “Your mate?” “Alpha Zade Matthews,” I said, my voice trembling. “He said I wasn’t good enough. That I didn’t deserve to be Luna.” The black wolf stared at me for a long time. Then he growled low, not at me, but at the air , like the name alone made him angry. “I see,” he said finally. The world began to blur again. My head felt heavy. I couldn’t keep my eyes open. “Hey,” his voice called, deep and commanding. “Stay awake.” “I can’t…” He stepped closer and pressed his nose against my fur. His warmth spread through me. “You’ll be safe,” he said. “I promise.” Then everything went black again. When I woke up the second time, I was no longer in the forest. Soft sheets touched my skin. I smelled herbs, firewood, and something clean , cedar and smoke. I blinked and looked around. The room was big and bright, with tall windows and stone walls. I wasn’t home. I tried to sit up, but pain shot through my side. I groaned. “Don’t move,” a soft voice said. I turned and saw a woman beside the bed. She wore a long white dress and held a bowl of steaming water. Her hair was silver, her eyes kind. “You’re safe now,” she said gently. “You’re in the Bloodmoon pack.” “Bloodmoon?” I repeated weakly. I had heard of them. A powerful, secretive pack that lived far from others. Their Alpha was said to be ruthless , and untouchable. “Your wounds were deep,” she continued. “But you’re healing fast. You should rest.” “Who… who brought me here?” She smiled faintly. “Our Alpha. You’re lucky he found you.” My heart skipped. The black wolf. “Where is he?” I asked. “Busy,” she said. “But I’ll tell him you’re awake.” When she left, I leaned back on the pillows, staring at the ceiling. My mind was spinning. Why would another Alpha save me , an Omega from another pack? He didn’t even know who I was. But then I remembered his eyes. Silver. Strong. Sad. Mira whispered faintly inside me. “He didn’t smell like danger.” “No,” I agreed softly. “He didn’t.” I looked out the window. The morning sun was rising, turning the sky gold. For the first time in days, I didn’t feel afraid. But deep inside, I knew this peace wouldn’t last. Because the world I came from never let Omegas stay safe for long. And if Zade ever found out another Alpha had saved me… The real storm would begin.
