Chapter 2

Mina awoke with a start. Her neck felt sore, and she tried to reach her hand up to touch the site of the pain. But her hand was frozen in place. I can’t move, she thought in a panic. What’s happening? Why can’t I move? She felt as stiff as a board. However, she was able to blink her eyes open. As the room came into focus, she observed a dimly-lit stone ceiling directly above. She glanced around, but she was unable to tilt her head to see anything else besides stone walls. “Hello, Mina,” came a soft, tenor voice from beside her. “I’m glad to see you’re awake. My name is Professor Luca Van der Linden. You’ve been bitten by a Vampire, and your body is currently undergoing rigor mortis.” “W-What?” asked Mina. She was surprised to hear her own voice, which she managed to squeak out from her dry, stiff throat. “Here, drink this,” said the voice. A dark figure appeared over her. As she squinted up at him, she could make out a pale, handsome face. His long, dark hair hung down to his shoulders, framing his chiseled facial features. His skin was smooth, and silvery gray eyes peered down at her, revealing no emotion. He appeared to be in his mid to late twenties.  She was momentarily taken aback by his attractive, mysterious face, but as soon as the warm liquid hit her tongue, she closed her eyes at the taste. The figure held a dropper in one hand and a silver goblet in the other, and he released a few drops at a time of a red substance into her mouth from above. Mina sighed as her throat was instantly soothed by the warm liquid. She closed her eyes as it lubricated her throat, sending a pleasant tingle down into her belly. It was an unfamiliar taste, like nothing like she had ever experienced before. Was this what they meant in Greek mythology when they feasted upon the nectar of the Gods? “That tastes incredible,” she gasped thankfully. “What is that?” “It’s blood,” replied the figure. “AB negative, to be exact.” Mina began to sputter and burst into a coughing fit. She felt blood drip down the side of her mouth, but she was unable to reach up and wipe it away as she lay frozen in place. “Careful, now, this is a rare blood type,” chastised the figure gently. “Here, allow me.” The figure placed the dropper in the goblet and reached out a long finger to her mouth. When his fingertip made contact against her skin, she felt a delicious electric wave run through her body at his cold touch. Despite being unable to move, she could feel a sensation of desire in between her legs. She wanted to squirm in delight, but her body held her prisoner against its own longing. He removed his finger, licking the remaining blood off of it before picking up the dropper again. “Your body will only be in rigor mortis for another couple of hours,” explained the figure, “and then you will complete your initial transition into a Vampire.” “A Vampire?” exclaimed Mina. “You’ve got to be joking, right?” “I’m afraid not,” he replied. “You were attacked by a Vampire who managed to turn you into one as well. I know this must come as quite a shock, but I’ve overseen hundreds of Vampire transitions here at Castle Gealach. You’re in good hands.” “Castle Gealach?” asked Mina. “Yes, let me start from the beginning,” he replied. “I found you in an alleyway in London. Unfortunately, I was unable to capture the Vampire who turned you, but I was able to bring you back here, to the Gealach School of Supernatural Beings. The school also serves Witches and Wizards and Werewolves, but I head up the Vampire program here at the school. My job is to track down newly-turned Vampires and help them transition into their new lives. You will be learning about your new powers in the Vampire Survivalism classes I teach, but until then, while you become accustomed to your new state of being, I’ll be coming in often to check on you. Whatever I can do to make your stay more comfortable, please do not hesitate to ask.” Mina felt her mind spinning in all directions as questions flooded her mind; however, she had no idea where to begin. “This room will serve as your private quarters for your stay here at Castle Gealach,” he continued. “Most Vampires stay here for about two years, unless they haven’t finished their secondary schooling yet, in which case they stay until their studies are complete. You’ll need to remain in here, secluded from the other Vampire students for at least a few weeks until you can control your thirst urges better. You are in your most uncontrolled and powerful state as a transitioning Vampire. In the wild, newly-transitioning Vampires are unprotected, so your body is in self-preservation mode until the transition is complete to protect itself. You could easily lose control and hurt one of the other students, so it’s for everyone’s safety. But you’ll meet the other Vampire students soon, and eventually, you’ll be able to intermingle with the general student population.” He released a few more droplets of blood into her mouth, and Mina accepted without spitting it out again. Although the idea of drinking blood was foreign – and admittedly, quite disgusting – she could not deny the sweet, delicious flavor it provided, not to mention the welcome relief on her sore throat. There were times when she had tasted her own blood in her mouth, like the time her father had accidentally fell into her in a drunken stupor and she was knocked into the wall. Her nose had begun to bleed profusely, and she recalled the way the blood tasted metallic on her tongue. But this tasted completely different. This tasted like nothing she had ever experienced before, and she wanted more of it. I could live on this stuff, she thought excitedly. Although, if she was a Vampire now, maybe she didn’t have a choice in the matter. “You’ve been provided with a set of school uniforms and toiletries,” said the handsome figure standing above her. “Is there anything else I can provide to make your stay more comfortable?” “Er…” Mina had to think on that for a minute. This was a lot of information to take in all at once, and she was just focused on getting her body to move again and coming to terms with being a, well, a Vampire. “It’s quite alright if nothing comes to mind at the moment,” he said gently. “Actually,” Mina interjected, “once I’m able to move, I would love some books to read. That is, if it’s not too much to ask?” “Not at all,” he said, and his mysterious lips hinted at the faintest of smiles. “What genres do you prefer?” “Honestly,” she replied, “anything and everything.” The man nodded appreciatively. “I will see to it right away.” Now that Mina wasn’t so focused on her thirst, she took a moment to study his face a bit longer. Wow, he’s really attractive, she thought to herself, feeling the desire creep up from between her inner thighs once again. Perhaps this was the dark, handsome stranger that she had been waiting for, after all.
