Chapter Four

Chapter Four Aurora Stirring from a deep, dreamless sleep, my head throbbing. Oh god, what happened last night? Peeping through one eye, Everest is sitting in a chair next to the bed. What is he doing here? He told me he was not allowed to the cabin until we are married. Throwing myself up, panickin! “Did we get married!?” I shout! Everest jumps up from the chair. Looking at me with a frown. “Aurora! Do not do that.” Everest holds his chest, taking a deep breath. I think I might have scared him. He sits back down in the chair, rubbing his face. He looks tired. “No, we are not married. Can you not remember what happened last night?” Laying back on the bed thinking back to yesterday. I had a meeting at work with Ms Rayne and Mr. Silver, Jaxen. Everything comes rushing back, Aliya. “Ok I remember, but can we leave the shouting till later please? My head is banging.” Everest does not say anything. Sighing, he stands, glancing into my eyes. Dropping his head, he leaves the room in silence. Ugh, why is all this happening now? Things could have been different. I am late for work again! I am being taken off this case now. Walking downstairs, I feel like complete s**t. Everest is standing in the little kitchen, staring out of the window. He looks deep in thought as the old-fashioned kettle begins to whilst on the stove. Pulling Everest from his thoughts. “Sit down. I will bring you some painkillers.” Taking a seat at the table watching Everest move around the kitchen. Once he has found the tablets, he gets a glass of water. Placing the cup down with a little thud, he throws the tablets on the table. I get that he is angry I would be, but does he have to be so cold with me? “I’m sorry, I didn’t think.” Everest cuts me off. “No, you didn’t think, and that is the f*****g problem, Aurora!” His shouts echo around the small cabin, making him sound louder than he is. “Do not shout at me, Everest, I am sorry. Let me explain.” “No, you do not need to explain. Yesterday your life was in danger by the humans, the point of you leading our people is to join us with them! Not put you, the future queen, in danger. You cannot endanger our people. I am sorry Aurora, I know you thought we could live with them, but we cannot. I am sorry to tell you, but I have no choice. This is for your safety as much as it is for the rest of our kind. You will never return to the city. You will not lead our people to them. From now on, you will do as our past queens have done. You will spend the next six months getting to know me. Then we will marry, and you will continue to lead our people the way my mother has.” Something about me is different from the rest of our kind. I do not know what it is or why, but I know I am nothing like any other wolf. All my life I have done what I want no matter the punishments to my alpha, my father. I do not listen to what I have been told and no matter how much I try to understand it, I cannot. My heart beats a different tune to theirs. I want to be with the human’s Something inside of me is calling me to them. A force pulling me back. I need them like I need oxygen. As a pup, I would always find myself at the edge of the forest or at the top of my favourite mounting looking out on the city. Dreaming of a day, I would walk alongside them, be one of them. I have not disappointed my entire family, driven them to the edge to be stopped by a man I am being forced to love. I was born to change our kind, and that is exactly what I am going to do. “Everest, you are stuck in the old times like your stubborn father. I admit my family took many years to listen to me, but they stopped thinking they knew what was best and listened. Now they know I am bigger than our entire kind, that I can and will make tremendous changes for us. I never let my family control me and I will not let you do it either. I have told you this. Step down from the alpha role for two minutes and listen.” Everest growls, swinging his arm he throws a glass across the room. Smashing behind my head, his face drops instantly. “Aurora” “No! You all preach how dangerous humans are, but you never take a second to see how dangerous we are. The humans may not cause harm to each other. They get arrested, but us our Kind. All we do is fight against each other. I am going to work now, and I swear if you turn up there today, I will kill you!” Grabbing my coat and keys, leaving quickly, not letting Everest talk, I do not want to hear anything from that control freak again! Work has been hell today, rushing around making sure I am fully prepared for my business trip to New York. I have seen no one today. I thought Karen would be standing outside my office waiting for me. Ready to rip me a new one for being late again. Aliya has done her best to avoid me. I have not got the energy to worry about her now. I will deal with her once I have finished working with Jaxen. Thinking of Jaxen, I am sure he was supposed to be here helping me prepare for this trip? Looks like my luck is over. I need to talk to Karen. A knock on my door stops me. “Come in.” My luck has just come back. Walking into my office with a bright smile is Mr Jaxen Silver. Thank you, lord. “Mr Silver, I was just thinking about you.” That came out the wrong way. “Oh, were you now? At least I am not the only one.” Looking down, smiling heat spreads over my cheeks. I need to get a hold of myself, blushing at a complaint. “I, sorry, the paperwork. I need to know if I have everything.” Jaxen coughs, trying to break the awkwardness that is built up in the room, but it does nothing. I will not admit I have not been able to stop thinking about him all day. “Let me look.” Jaxen walks over to the pile of paperwork spread out across my desk. He reads the headlines at the top of each piece, nodding happily to himself. I never thought I would see someone this happy about paperwork. “Can I ask you something?” Jaxen looks up slightly. His eyes are gorgeous. Swallowing nervously, where are these thoughts coming from? “You can ask me anything, Aurora.” The way my name slides off his tongue melts me. My legs are growing weak. If it were not for this table, I would be on the floor! “Ok, why do you look so happy while handling paperwork?” A sweet sound of laughter comes from Jaxen. I wish I could hear this sound daily! What is happening with these thoughts? This is not like me at all. “You sound just like my cousin Sky. She does not understand it either. My work brings me a sense of peace. It is the only thing I have full control of. You look confused. Let me know. Explain, life we do not have full control over it. We can only try to take control over a situation. My company, everything happens because I have control over it.” I understand what Jaxen is talking about. I used to find peace telling my mother how I was going to change our future. Jaxen must notice something is wrong as he wraps his massive hand over mine. Gently, he strokes across my knuckles, sending shivers up my arm. “I might just want to keep you in New York once this case is complete. I have heard nothing but good things about you, Ms Faizan.” When did it get so hot? “I’m not sure, Mr Silver, Karen, wouldn’t want to lose her best lawyer she has,” Jaxen nods his head in approval. “Yes, you are the best. I have heard and read nothing but amazing things about you, Aurora. You have a passion for your job that I have not seen before. You are remarkable in the courtroom. I read up on Aliya. Was the girl coming to New York first?” “Yes, Aliya.” “She is talented, but there is just something about the way you present your case, Aurora. You know how to get everyone's attention.” Jaxen talks about me like he has known me for years, not a day. I must have given him a good impression yesterday. Even if everything went wrong “I didn’t realise I gave such a good impression.” Jaxen squeezes my hand. Standing straight, he walks towards me. He is a lot taller than me. His eyes burn into me as he looks down at my small, fragile body. Swallowing, taking in every detail of his handsome face. He is perfect. “Aurora, you left a great impression I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you since yesterday.” Am I dreaming? Is this really happening? Jaxen’s phone rings, pulling his attention back. He steps back, taking his phone from his jacket pocket, groaning when he sees the caller Id. “Are you not going to answer that?” Jaxen shoves the phone back into his pocket. He sighs, looking back at me. “No, it’s not important.” “Ok.” “Well, Ms Faizan, you have everything you need business wise. Are you packed ready for our departure tomorrow?” We are just going to act like nothing just happened. Ok I can play his game. “I have a few things to sort.” “Well then, I shall leave you to go tie up your loose ends. I will call you later with the final details.” Jaxen nod’s walking backwards as he talks. I nod back, not able to speak. What is he doing? He reaches the door, winking as he steps out backwards. Breathing out a breath I was unwilling holding on to. What is this man doing to me? How am I going to cope with working with him? Pacing back and forth, running my fingers through my long-knotted hair, my nerves spiking with every second that passes, waiting for Everest. I asked him to come so we could talk. Time to tell him about my trip to New York for a week. I am not looking forward to climbing Everest. I know he is going to argue with me about it. He does not understand my job or what I love about it, so he will never understand how important this is. I just hope he does not make this too difficult for me. This cabin is beautiful, the fond woodwork brings an old but modern effect. The old-style fireplace is cosy. The décor could be changed, but everything else is perfect. I just wish I did not have to marry Everest to have it. Now I sound selfish. The door swings open with a creek, well not perfect. He is not alone. Someone is standing behind. Him, please do not be Mr. Price. Everest steps aside, standing behind him lingering in the doorway. “Jack!” “Hello, stranger.” Running across the room, jumping into Jack’s arms, wrapping my arms around his neck. He is here. I cannot believe he is here. “I have missed you so much.” “Aurora, I am so sorry.” Leaning back, trying to hold back the tears covering my eyes. “Don’t.” Stepping out of his arms, turning to Everest. “Thank you.” “This is the first time I have felt you happy. I have felt it in the city, but not here. I have taken you from the people you love and care for.” “I am not talking about that again.” “Fine.” Everest storms off into the kitchen. Jack moves into the cabin, closing the front door. “Things at home are strange without you. No one knows what to do. We are just waiting.” “I know how they feel. Just watch. I am about to make things worse.” “Aurora, no, I hate it when you say that.” I know he does. I smile, knowing just how much he loves it well. “Everest, come here. I need to talk to you.” Jack shakes his head, taking a seat on the settee, getting ready to watch. He thinks he is funny. “What?” Charming as ever Everest Price. “About work.” We are not discussing that place. “Everest, please.” Everest is not happy, and neither is Jack now. Ugh, why don’t they just listen before they judge? “Please don’t talk about last night.” What is Jack talking about? Oh, my god he was my friend, oh no. “Jack, what happened to you and my boss?” “Let's never talk about that, ok?” Nodding in agreement. “I am leaving for a week. I have a business trip to New York.” Jack burst into laughter. He must think this is a joke. Everest knows I am telling the truth. He does not speak, he just walks across the room, opens the front door and leaves. “I think you pissed him off.” I have really made him angry. As he left, I felt his anger. “Oh well, I was not joking. I am leaving tomorrow morning.” “I know. I thought you were brave, blurting it out like that.” “Oh well, he will be back, and he will demand I don’t go.” “Yes, and we all know you will completely ignore him leaving, anyway.” “You know me too well.” “I do, but I must cut this short. I need to get back. Stay safe, I love you.” “I love you too. Give my love to everyone, please.” We say our goodbyes and I wave him off. Now I need to finish packing. Everest will be back. A loud bang wakes me up, jumping out of bed, remembering what I was tough as a child. Leaning against the wall near the door, ready to attack. Crashing comes from downstairs, loud footsteps hit the wooden stairs. Getting ready. “Aurora, where the f**k are you?” Everest shouts as a thud, hits into something. For god's sake. Opening the bedroom door. For God’s sake! Everest lays face down at the top of the stairs grunting to himself. “Are you drunk?” “Maybe a little.” Heading back to bed, Everest stumbles in a couple of minutes later. What is he doing? Why would he come here like this? “I am not letting you; you go anywhere.” “Everest I am going on this business trip.” He stands tall, he tries his best to stand tall. I have not got time for this. My alarm is set to wake me in four hours. I hope Jaxen calls because he did not last night. “No!” “Everest, go downstairs and sleep on the settee tonight, please. We will discuss this in the morning.” “Fine, but you are not going, Aurora!” “Fine, now go.” Everest is reluctant to leave, but after a staring contest with the wall, he finally leaves. Why am I awake, picking my phone up clicking the message icon. Hitting Jaxen’s name. “Hi, Mr. Silver, Ms. Faizan here. I was just checking everything was in place for tomorrow.” Lying back down on the bed, sighing. New York, I hope you are kinder to me. I need a break from stress. I woke up an hour earlier. Yes, I was not risking anything stopping me. I left Everest snoring on the settee. I just want to get on this plane before he wakes up. Jaxen left me a voicemail. He had to fly home early, so I am now travelling alone. I am not too bothered I get some much-needed breathing space. I left a note on the table in front of Everest. He will see it as soon as he wakes up. I could not just leave saying nothing. I hope he can understand why I am doing this. Boarding the plane, this is really happening. My phone is now off. I am leaving.
