A soldier stepped forward with nails
and a hammer in his hand,
And he hammered the nails into His
palms that were soiled by the sand.
The blood squirted into his face. “Oh
my what an unpleasant scene!”
Then he started with the feet without
wiping his b****y face clean.
It seemed like the sight of blood,
aroused a period of silence
But not for long as most of the
spectators enjoyed the violence.
69
The cross was then placed upright
into a hole dug on Calvary
So that the people standing further
away could also see.
Jesus then lifted His head towards
heaven and said loud and clear,
“Father forgive them - for the gravity
of their actions they are unaware.”
The death of an innocent man is
enough to make any person moan,
But hanging Him between two thieves
that’s total disrespect being shown.
70
THE TWO MALEFACTORS
The thieves walking behind Jesus
were managing okay
In spite of the weight of the cross
they made it all the way.
They were staunch members of a
notorious gang
Their leader was released but they
were sentenced to hang.
Both men were from respectable
homes in that town
But bad influences and wrong
choices brought them down.
71
As children they attended church
every week
A habit cultivated in them before
they could speak.
Now all alone they faced the worst
death invented by a nation
Because of shame their families
left town without hesitation.
There’s a lot of truth in the saying:
“What you sow you will reap.”
Frightening because that payment
is at times very steep.
72
The day moved on, the hot sun
drove the men insane
Then there was the mocking
linked to the agony and pain.
“If You are the Son of God come
down, give it your best!”
That would’ve been a spectacle if
He had conceded to their request.
I noticed that Jesus and the thieves
were engaged in conversation.
I moved closer so that whatever I
heard I could inform the nation.
73
The thief hanging on the right was
kicking up a fuss,
“Son of God save yourself and do
the same for us.”
The other thief reprimanded him
saying: “We deserve to die,
But He is innocent and He offers
salvation for you and I.”
I have often witnessed strange
events but none like that day,
As I listened to what Jesus and
the thief had to say.
74
The thief requested forgiveness and
salvation when He comes back again.
Jesus promised him Heaven where
there’ll be no more death nor pain.
I saw two women and a man standing
around the cross
The women were crying and the man
seemed rather lost.
Then Jesus turned and said to the
man, “John, behold your Mother”
To weeping Mary He said,” Behold
your son, look after one another.”
75
Then about the sixth hour that
Friday the sun covered it’s face
For three hours there was darkness
at Calvary and every other place.
In the darkness I distinctly heard the
voice of someone crying in agony
It was the voice of Jesus, “My God!
My God! Why have You forsaken Me?”
This turn of events made the people
afraid and they started moving away
Even the soldiers and officials were
looking for an excuse not to stay.
76
IT IS OVER
Then Jesus made an announcement
that shook the devil and his clan,
“It is finished - the battle is over
I’ve completed my part of the plan.”
To the Angels and the unfallen worlds
this cry had a deep significance,
Exposing Satan’s identity and character
was of utmost importance.
Satan and his host orchestrated the
murder of Jesus Christ on the cross
Satan wanted the plan of redemption
to fail so that he could be the boss.
77
But in heaven there was much rejoicing
because the battle was won,
The curtain between the Holy and Most
Holy place was rent and undone.
Now it was unnecessary to bring a
lamb to the temple for a sacrifice,
The Lamb of God, Jesus our Savior
died and paid the complete price.
Before He died Jesus asked for water
but, vinegar was offered instead.
“Father into Thy hands I commend
My spirit,” is the last thing He said.
