Chapter 5: A Dangerous Alliance

“I don’t trust her,” Ash growled the words through clenched teeth, his posture tense and his eyes narrowed at Lyra. His voice was low, warning, and full of suspicion. Lyra raised an eyebrow, unfazed by his hostility. “Trust me, Alpha. You’re not in a position to make demands,” she said, her voice cool but carrying an edge of something dangerous. She knew how to handle Ash’s aggressive energy. “I’m the one offering you the only chance to reclaim your pack.” I stood between them, my heart thumping, unsure of who to trust. Ash’s mistrust was valid; after all, Lyra had been one of Kieran’s most loyal supporters. Her sudden shift in allegiance felt like a trick. I couldn’t ignore the feeling in my gut—something about her wasn’t adding up. She had her own agenda, I was certain of it. But I also knew that we were running out of time. Kieran was growing stronger, and his alliances with other Alphas were forming like an impenetrable web. “Why are you doing this, Lyra?” I asked, my voice steady despite the anxiety that churned in my chest. “What’s your game? You don’t just switch sides like this. Not without a reason.” Lyra’s sharp gaze flickered toward me for just a moment before she smirked. “Don’t act so surprised, Sienna. Do you think I’m doing this out of the goodness of my heart? No.” She stepped closer, her eyes locked on mine, her voice taking on a quieter, more personal tone. “Kieran is a monster. He’s dangerous to anyone, even those who serve him.” “But why help us?” Ash demanded, his eyes flicking between Lyra and me. “You were loyal to him. You—” “I was a fool,” she interrupted him, her words harsh, like a confession she hadn’t wanted to make. “But that doesn’t matter now. What matters is stopping Kieran before he destroys everything.” I studied her, watching for any sign of deceit. “So, what exactly do you want from us?” Her lips curled into a smile, but it wasn’t comforting. “I’ll help you get to Kieran, but there’s a price.” Ash’s nostrils flared. “What kind of price?” She held up a hand, silencing him. “Not for me, for you. You’ll do what I say, and only then will you have the chance to destroy Kieran. You want your pack back, don’t you?” Her voice was almost mocking as if she was testing his resolve. I crossed my arms, stepping forward. “You haven’t answered my question. Why the sudden change?” Lyra’s eyes turned cold, almost predatory. “Because I’ve seen what Kieran is capable of. I know better than anyone what happens when you cross him.” Her gaze shifted to Ash, then back to me. “And, if you’re both smart, you’ll do as I say.” My instincts screamed that she was hiding something. Her sudden betrayal of Kieran was too convenient. She’d probably planned it for some time. But even so, her information about Kieran’s power struggles seemed too critical to ignore. We had no choice but to hear her out, even if it meant treading carefully. Ash wasn’t convinced, though. He turned his back on Lyra, pacing across the cave floor, frustration radiating off him. “I don’t like this. I don’t trust her, Sienna.” I felt the same way, but we didn’t have the luxury of trust. “We don’t have time for this, Ash. If she’s telling the truth, then we need her help. We can’t waste any more time fighting amongst ourselves.” “Fine,” Ash snapped, spinning around to face me, his jaw clenched. “But you’re not going alone. I won’t let you—” I held up a hand, cutting him off. “You’ll have to. She wants me to infiltrate one of Kieran’s allied packs. No one else can get in. If it goes wrong, I’m the one who will pay for it.” Ash’s face turned a shade darker. He was seething, and his worry was palpable. “No, Sienna. This is insane. You’re asking me to sit back and let you—” “I’m asking you to trust me.” I stepped toward him, forcing him to meet my gaze. My heart pounded in my chest, not from fear, but from the intensity of this moment. His love for me was a weight I didn’t know how to handle. His need to protect me could destroy everything if I let it. “I can do this, Ash,” I whispered, my voice shaking just a little, though I refused to let him see it. “I’ve been doing this for years. I can fight. I can survive. This is my curse, and I will face it.” The anger in his eyes softened just enough for me to see the vulnerability beneath it. His fingers twitched at his side, but he didn’t reach for me. “You think I’m afraid you’ll die?” He laughed bitterly, but there was no joy in it. “I’m terrified you’ll leave me. That you’ll… kill me. I can’t live with that, Sienna.” The words hit me like a blow. The fear in his voice was too real, too raw. His love for me was his greatest strength, but it also made him weak, made him terrified of the very thing that drew him to me. I wanted to reach out, to tell him it would be okay. But deep down, I knew I couldn’t promise him that. My curse made sure of that. “I won’t leave you, Ash,” I said quietly, the words feeling more like a vow than a reassurance. “But I can’t let you control me. Not when it comes to this.” Ash stood still, silent for a moment, and I wondered if he could hear my heart breaking. His eyes softened, and for the briefest second, I saw the leader he once was before his exile—the Alpha who wasn’t afraid of anything. “I don’t want to lose you,” he murmured, almost too low for me to hear. I shook my head, pushing my emotions aside. “You won’t lose me. I’ll come back.” I hoped I sounded more confident than I felt. Lyra, who had been watching the exchange with barely concealed amusement, finally spoke again. “Enough of this. You’re wasting time. Kieran’s plan isn’t waiting for you to sort out your emotional drama.” I shot her a glare. “Keep your mouth shut, Lyra. We’re not your pawns.” She raised both hands, mocking surrender. “Fine. But remember, you asked for my help.” She turned on her heel, her eyes flashing. “Now, let me tell you how we’re going to make sure Kieran doesn’t destroy everything you’ve worked for.” I glanced at Ash, his expression unreadable. But before we could discuss it further, Lyra’s words stopped me cold. “Kieran plans to kill you both. If you want to survive, you’ll follow my plan—or die fighting.”
