I still couldn't wrap my head around the part of Cruz I encountered that evening but I let it pass.
The blue festival started in a few days. It was a three night festival and I could sense enthusiasm, rivalry, and some tension in the air already on the first day.
I got dressed up in a short sleeved shirt and black pants trousers with white sneakers then headed out for the festival. Austin was in a musical so he left earlier than me to have their final rehearsals before the night seeped in.
I was walking alone until someone snuck up on me. I was startled for a second and almost revealed my girlish voice.
"Ah, Kian." I said subconsciously upon seeing who it was. He was the least expected person I wanted to see. Immediately, I bowed my head a bit in respect to him and he slapped my shoulder like he would to a guy, like I was his homie.
Then he threw his arm around my shoulder as we walked together.
"Don't be like that, we are both students here." He said, laughing.
"We aren't the same." I responded to him and he shrugged it off.
"You are not on any team?" He inquired and I raised the corner of my lips.
"Nothing special. I will do a few recitations today." I said to him, Since everyone was meant to do something at least, I picked something that wouldn't stress me much. The Scholars Team.
I knew I was going to be a great benefit to the team since I was very good with memorizing on time...
"Hm...Scholars..I see."
"What about you?" I asked, but I gave the answer almost immediately too. "Ar...since you are a--"
"Coordinating team." He cut me off.
"But you are part of the board, shouldn't you be on the upfront? I heard there will be one."
As though he avoided answering the question, he just smiled it off and did not say anything.
We got to the venue, an open-air space. The whole place was well decorated and lit up, prepared to receive over five hundred students who were potential Alpha leaders.
There was a long table that was strangely designed at the forefront, and I guessed that was the high table. People were coming in, the music band was setting up and I didn't need to look for Austin before I saw him, laughing with some of his band members. He looked truly happy.
I sighed. Kian had left to do his thing too, I stood in the midst of the chairs, staring hard at nothing, like a stranger.
I still did not feel in place at Ravenlake academy, I was only there to prepare myself for the storm ahead, nothing else. And really, I was getting worn out, but Rowan was my only motivation. I would not let him just die in vain.
Soon, the festival started and fireworks started going off randomly, so colorfully. With each minute passing, the atmosphere at the festival got more intense. All of a sudden, there were men all dressed in black, surrounding the venue. The space was heavily-guarded.
Then the guests of honour, stakeholders who were alumni were introduced by their portfolios, and not names, which was very weird. So the authorities here were to be kept anonymous?
They all came up one after the other, dressed elegantly, all males, with black designed masks on their faces.
Every other person seemed used to it, but I was not. I perceived some shadiness and I could not just place a hold on it.
"We will have the music band in a bit, but before then, can we welcome a Ravenlake Scholar for a history reminder. Rowan Zeus?" The f**k! My heart jumped the moment I heard my name.
The team lead never told me I was going to do this, he only told us all to study Ravenlake's history and that was it.
Slowly, I got up from my chair and stepped forward, praying to the moon goddess not to make me mess this up. My ratings would fall so hard if I did not do well here.
I took the wireless microphone from the handler and took a deep breath. Then I closed my eyes, pictured the book I had read all night and started reading it.
The history of whoever seemed plain and cliche to me, it didn't seem like the real history, but a cooked up one.
"Over 100 years ago, Ravenlake Academy was founded..." I continued on like that, reading it line for line as it was in the book, from the very first page, to the last.
After so many minutes of reading so eloquently, I rounded it up and then opened my eyes to see a crowd applauding me, faces in awe and voices murmuring positive words.
I smiled faintly, returned the mic and stepped down from the podium, then I returned to my seat.
I halted my steps for half a second when I saw Ash sitting on the chair beside mine, then I went ahead to sit.
"I thought you went off grid?" I started the conversation.
"Missed me?"
"That's disgusting." I said to him,
"I am not interested in boys either." I could literally feel him roll his eyes, even though my eyes were fixated on those on the high table.
"Do you know any of them?" I asked Ash out of the blue.
"The higher ups? Why do you ask?"
"The anonymity makes me more curious." I opened up to him without holding back.
"I haven't seen any of them, I don't know them either." Ash said, in a dismissive manner.
"Why can't I believe you?" I asked rhetorically, folding my arms.
"Well, that's up to you. Just tell you what I know." He said nonchalantly.
We didn't say anything for a while and just let the noise from the festival fly around our senses.
Austin and his band performed and really got the students in high spirits. Soon, the chairs were packed up and then the real festival began. There were set ups like trade fairs for free outdoor snacks, foods, drinks, ancient ornaments and many other things.
The games coordinator came onboard and I was surprised to see that Kian was heading the team, he was meant to be on the high table, right?
But he was standing right there, looking so happy for doing it.
Ash and I grabbed some skewed meat and chewed on it as the games for the night were announced.
There were going to be sparring sessions, some petty games and the master of them all, which was Masked Alpha Hunt.
I turned to Ash. "Hm? What is the hunt about?"
He filled his mouth with the savory meat and responded to me that way. "It's a game where everyone wears enchanted masks and one is secretly chosen as the Alpha to be hunted." He explained to me and I released an 'oh'.
As the spar was about to start, one of the stakeholders held his hand up, causing everything to be stilled. Everyone kept quiet, the fireworks stopped and it'd be so loud if a pin dropped to the ground at this point.
He was given a mic to amplify his voice. The deep voice sent chills down my spine, he sounded so familiar but I could not remember who it was that had that voice.
"The winner gets a free glide into the Alpha trials." He said and everyone booed.
It was not something just anyone could get in and I could testify to it, given the training we had with Brant so far, and Ash was still saying recently that it was just the beginning stage of training and that we had not reached the c****x yet. I wondered if the c****x would be when some of my bones broke?
The promise of that stakeholder intensified the rivalry spirit in the atmosphere. Other stakeholders placed a bet on each spar, each person didn't bet anything less than a million dollars.
I could not just wrap my head around the whole thing. This was supposed to be a light competition, right? Now they were placing too much pressure on each sparring party. I just had a feeling that it was not going to end well.
Funny enough, the both had good fighting skills and the fight ended in a draw around thirty straight minutes.
I could not have been any more pleased. It was just similar to what happened with Ash and Cruz, even though there was no bet on the scene, there might have been a bet behind the scenes.
Then it occurred to me that I had not seen Cruz at all. I turned to Ash again, who seemed to be enjoying the festival. "Have you seen..Cruz?"
"He is my sworn enemy, why are you asking about him from me?" He sounded so serious about that so I did not push the discussion further.
Soon, it was time for the Masked Alpha Hunt and people seemed to be so hyper about it, I just could not fit in the mood.
Some guys went around, handing over black face masks to us. I was given one too and I put it on. Indeed, it was enchanted because through the mask, everyone literally looked the same.
So it was left to us to discover who the secret Alpha was, by tracking his scent.
We are supposed to get confirmation from within when we meet who the person was. That was how over five hundred students moved around in circles, trying to find out when the secret chosen Alpha was.
I did not try hard at first, but things started getting more interesting when we started hearing the blaring, continuous drum sounds.
The senses in the body are connected to the brain, and oftentimes if your ears are busy, you might want to keep things silent so as to draw an accurate perception through the sense of smell.
So they were trying to mess with our senses, and probably discover abilities.
As we went in a large circle, I noticed a certain masked guy hovering around me. I literally saw him each turn I took and no, it was not coincidental.
While others were busy with finding who the Alpha was, this one kept following me and I could not get my mind off it. I stayed on guard just in case of anything. I still had a long way to go and I would not risk some crazy jerk ruining the whole thing for me.
He watched me and I did the same, then all of a sudden, he sprung forward, towards me and grabbed me by the wrist.
I almost threw a punch at him when he raised my hand in the air.
"I found the Alpha." He raised his voice.
