The Glowing Medallion

Still in the spirit of the Blue festival, the night was fast approaching. I had spent the day thinking and thinking about the two messages I received anonymously that morning. It threw me in fear but I did not express my panic openly, I chested it with the determination to find who it was and every other thing. It was a traditional night so I put on a blue crocheted shirt with big black cargo pants and black loafers. Each student was to wear something that was unique to their lineage and so for me, the only thing that survived with me into Ravenlake academy was the dark brown knitted bracelet my father gave to me. It wasn't an ordinary one, it was an enchanted bracelet that was meant to help me whenever it wished - according to what I was told, but I didn't always wear it. So as soon as I got a room at Ravenlake, I kept it hidden in my wardrobe. I wore the bracelet and suddenly felt a power surge within me for a minute, it almost engulfed me but I had to pull out of it. So I headed out to the venue which was a different space this time around. According to rumors, it was meant to be held in the forestry part of the school. My heart was filled with uncertainty but a bit of excitement. I wanted to see the Ravenlake forest that we had been restricted from going into freely. I walked along with a bunch of students heading there and just trailed behind. "I heard there are some guys pulling strings here." One of them started a conversation. One literally rolled his eyes. "It has to be Ash or Cruz. Those two proud assholes." "I doubt it though." The third guy said, throwing the other two in a different line of thought. "I can't believe he won the Alpha Hunt game last night, now he gets to lead the students for the next one month." I didn't know a price as such came with it. "His leadership skills aren't so bad." Another said. "Yeah, and that's why you would never make it to the pre- Alpha trials." One mocked him for the statement and I just realized pure hate for Cruz from the reaction. "I just need them both out of the picture, they aren't giving others enough space to shine." The third guy lamented softly and I almost rolled my eyes. The sky is big enough so why blame someone else for your inability and lack of good skills? I took a lot of self control for me not to interfere in the discussion and cook some of them. I stayed calm because in the end of it all, that wasn't my goal in this academy. Fighting for Cruz or Ash? That was the least I would do in my entire stay in this school. As if on purpose, the space made out for the festival wasn't deep in the forest, it was just many steps away from the barriers placed around it. As we walked closer to the venue, my ears became so sensitive and before I knew it, an arrow flew past my face and got stuck in a tree. It was not just one. Arrows flew in a few seconds, getting stuck in other trees too, calling the attention of students. For a minute there, we all were shocked and turned back to see where they came from. We saw guys wearing all black hoods with masks. Almost immediately, they disappeared into thin air and then mustered up courage to remove the arrows. They had a paper tied around them, like a letter. The talkative guys in front of me removed one and opened the paper, they muttered words amongst themselves, looking surprised. "The relic is going to be featured at the festival tonight?" They murmured and so did other students. Those guys immediately ran off, dropping the paper from the arrow on the floor, then I moved closer and picked it up. It was written with ancient ink, one no own would see randomly in a bookshop. *The glowing Medallion will be brought to the festival today.* I was not sure I knew what that was but from the students' reactions, it seemed like trouble in some manner. We got to the festival and things were starting to cook up already. I looked around carefully for the relic they said was going to be at the festival but I did not see anything just yet. "Looking for someone?" Kian snuck up behind me and I was startled. "Ugh.." I felt relieved and touched my chest. "I don't appreciate you sneaking up on me like that." "Are you a girl? Why chicken out?" He confronted me and I swallowed hard. "It doesn't just sit well with me. Do I have to be a girl before you stop sneaking up on me?" I frowned and he smiled. "No offence! Did you enjoy last night?" He asked and immediately, the question took me to the Alpha Hunt game. "You...did you mark me the Alpha for the game when we were walking down to the venue?" I asked without holding back and given his reaction, it was an obvious yes. I felt like I was betrayed in some manner. "I am sorry but it's just the rules of the game to not say a word even to the Alpha himself." He apologized immediately and I nodded, hoping so hard that he being with me at that time was not another setup. "Don't worry, I have no hand in whatever will happen today, so you are safe." He responded, as though he had read my mind. The night seeped in as usual and we all just stood, watching and enjoying the sights. There were some traditional play, another music performance that got us shaking our heads in sync with the rhythm and some wrestle rounds. One of the stakeholders, masked but dressed in an unusual regalia stepped forward in a quiet moment and raised his hand, demonstrated it in a strange way and then slowly, something in the space started becoming visible. The glowing medallion! It had been there all along, but invisible! It was hanging right there in the air, glowing with blue light all around it. I could feel the energy, and I felt nauseous all of a sudden. I felt so irritated and uncomfortable, then the masked stakeholder gestured for the coordinator to carry on with the festival. I looked beside me and could not find Kian there. My heart started beating abnormally, I looked around for him but he was nowhere to be seen. Something was not right. I was panicking so much within me. "What are you looking for this time?" I heard his voice and I turned to him with eyes wide open. "You look shocked.." he pointed out, but I ignored him and turned to the stakeholders seat, the masked guy that dressed unusually was still on his seat. Then I sighed, not even knowing why I reacted that way. "It's nothing. Where did you go though?" I asked him. "To get drinks..." That was when he handed a bottle of non alcoholic drink to me while he held one too. "Thanks." As I opened the capped bottle, my brain went blank for a second and the bottle dropped from my hand, then shattered. It called mad attention towards me and that was when I came back to myself. "Are you okay, Rowan?" Kian asked out of concern and I just nodded absent-mindedly, staring at the broken bottle on the floor. "What happened?" I asked him and he looked even more confused. "You just dropped a bottle." The moment he said that, I felt a sudden vibration from within me, I felt my throat so tight, making me gasp for air. I fisted my hands, then soon took them to my neck to rub my throat. I could not understand what was going on with me, as if there was a force controlling me and causing an effect. All the while, I tried to stay cool but Kian was watching so closely but didn't say anything. Then I found my eyes moving in the direction of the relic that was still hanging in the air. 'It's the medallion... it's attacking me.' I picked it immediately and then I threw up blood from my mouth, moving my eyes to the ground. "Rowan!" Kian yelled, sounding so concerned and every other thing around me literally stopped. All attention was on me and I could catch a glimpse of some of the stakeholders getting up and moving closer, though still a distance away. "Someone get the medics! Or call the physicians, call someone and stop standing there like fools!" I heard Kian yell so angrily. Just then, another person shouted. "The glowing medallion is gone! It's been stolen!!!" Even in my state, I was so shocked at the sudden turn of events. The medallion is gone!!
