Three years can turn a desperate boy into a living weapon.
The peak of the Cloud-Torn Ridge groaned under the weight of a supernatural gale. Purple lightning ripped through the black sky, illuminating the jagged rocks and the massive, swirling vortex of clouds above. Down in the valleys, the riverbeds had cracked into dry dust, but up here, all the water in the world seemed to be trapped in the sky, swirling around a single figure.
Kenji stood at the edge of the precipice, his long black coat whipping wildly around his legs. The iron sword in his right hand no longer looked like a cheap piece of scrap metal. Its blade pulse with a steady, deep crimson light that hummed in perfect synchronicity with his heartbeat. He looked up at the towering entity floating in the center of the storm—a giant clad in armor made of dark clouds, its eyes burning like twin stars.
"You have kept the rains from the lowlands for far too long, Zephyrus," Kenji shouted, his voice cutting through the thunder like a cracked whip.
The God of Storms laughed, a sound that shook the very stone beneath Kenji's boots. "Mortal insect! You think because you survived three years in hiding that you can challenge the order of the sky? The rivers belong to the heavens!"
"They belong to the people who are starving," Kenji replied, stepping forward.
From the edge of the rocky plateau, Soren watched from behind a boulder, his hand clutching a newly forged iron spear. His leg had healed, but his face was tight with worry. "Kenji! The lightning is too dense near the center! Do not rush in!"
"He has to rush in, young man," a calm voice answered from behind him. Master Vaelen sat casually on a flat rock, his white blindfold clean despite the mud and rain. He sipped from a small leather flask. "If he hesitates, the storm will swallow him whole."
"You are entirely too calm about this, old man," Soren muttered, never taking his eyes off his friend.
"I have great faith in my student," Vaelen smiled softly.
Above them, Zephyrus raised a massive hand, and three bolts of lightning converged into a massive lance of pure energy. "Die in the dirt where you belong!" the god roared, hurling the lance straight at Kenji.
The attack was blindingly fast, but Kenji did not flinch. He raised his crimson blade, channeling the divine heat stored inside his own flesh directly into the iron. With a ferocious upward s***h, he met the lightning head-on.
The collision shook the entire mountain. The crimson energy of Kenji's sword cut the lightning bolt completely in half, sending the fractured currents crashing into the rocks behind him. The ground exploded into fragments, but Kenji was already moving, his body blurring into a streak of red light as he sprinted up the rising wind currents.
"What?" the god hissed, trying to summon another strike.
"My turn," Kenji said, appearing right in front of the giant's face.
The battle became a cinematic blur of steel and thunder. Kenji leaped from one floating chunk of debris to another, his sword clashing against the god's cloud armor. Every strike left deep, glowing red scars in the deity's defenses. Zephyrus swung his massive arms, creating concussive shockwaves that shattered the stone cliffs, but Kenji moved with impossible grace, weaving through the wind just as Vaelen had taught him.
"You cannot defeat the sky!" Zephyrus bellowed, unleashing a massive dome of electricity that expanded outward, consuming everything within fifty paces.
Kenji was caught in the blast. He cried out as thousands of volts surged through his body, tearing at his clothes and scorching his skin. But instead of falling, the glowing red mark on the back of his right hand flared into life. It began to drink the lightning, pulling the god's own elemental energy into Kenji's meridians.
"I told you," Kenji panted, his eyes glowing with a faint, dangerous crimson light as he pushed through the electric barrier. "I am the Dao-Slayer."
With a final, explosive burst of speed, Kenji lunged through the remaining electricity. He gripped his hilt with both hands and drove the iron blade straight through the center of the god's celestial armor, burying the metal deep into his chest.
The storm instantly froze. The howling wind died down to a breathless whisper, and the dark clouds began to fracture, leaking brilliant golden light from the seams.
Kenji landed heavily on the god's floating platform, holding the hilt tight as the divine core within Zephyrus began to liquefy, pouring into the iron blade and surging into Kenji's right hand. The power was immense, making his muscles swell and his veins burn with a new, roaring strength.
Soren ran forward from the rocks, his face lighting up. "You did it! Kenji, the storm is breaking! Look at the sky!"
Kenji did not answer. He was staring down at the face of the dying god. The giant's starlight eyes were fading, turning into dull gray smoke, and the terrifying aura of arrogance was completely gone.
Kenji braced himself for a final curse, a threat, or a scream of agony. Instead, the giant’s lips curved into a faint, exhausted smile.
"Thank you," the dying god whispered, his voice so quiet it barely reached Kenji's ears. "Thank you for freeing me from this cage."
