The Prophecy’s Script

1120 Words
The words of the dying storm god haunted Kenji like a ghost. For three days, the phrase echoed in his mind as he led Soren deep into the Black Ridge Mountains, searching for answers. They finally found what they were looking for at the entrance of a forbidden ruin, a crumbling stone temple buried under centuries of thick vines and dark moss. The air inside was freezing, smelling of ancient dust and damp earth. Kenji kept his hand tightly gripped around his iron sword hilt, watching the shadows shift along the damp walls. The crimson veins in the metal were quiet for now, but they thrummed with a low, nervous energy that matched the rhythm of his own racing heart. "I still do not like this place, Kenji," Soren whispered, his hand resting tightly on his iron spear as his eyes darted from one dark corner to another. "The legends say anyone who enters these ruins never comes back out. We should have consulted Master Vaelen before coming up here." "The legends also said gods could not die," Kenji replied, keeping his voice low as they moved deeper into the structure. "We cannot trust the stories anymore. We need to know why Zephyrus thanked me for killing him. He did not look like a monster facing defeat. He looked like a prisoner who had just been handed a key." They walked deeper into the central chamber, where massive obsidian pillars held up a cracked, sagging ceiling. The air grew heavier, thick with an unnatural pressure that made it difficult to draw a full breath. Suddenly, the heavy stone doors behind them slammed shut with a deafening crash, plunging the entire room into near-total darkness. "An ambush!" Soren yelled, spinning around and dropping into a defensive stance, his spear leveled at the dark pathway behind them. "Kenji, get behind me!" A low, rumbling chuckle echoed from the deepest shadows of the room. The temperature in the chamber dropped instantly, turning their breath into white mist, and a thick, purple fog began to roll across the floorboards. From the darkness stepped a towering figure. He was clad in heavy obsidian armor that seemed to actively absorb the light around it, and his eyes burned with a chaotic, violet fire. It was Malakor, the Sovereign of the Demon Realm. "The famous Dao-Slayer," Malakor said, his voice vibrating through the stone walls like a low earthquake. "You walk into my domain so carelessly, mortal. Did your blind master not warn you about the things that live in the dark?" Kenji drew his sword in a single, fluid motion, the crimson veins on the blade flaring to life and casting an eerie red glow across his face. "Step aside, demon. I have no quarrel with you or your kind, but I will cut you down if I have to. I am not in the mood for games." "Always so eager to swing that toy," Malakor sneered, but he did not raise a weapon or move to attack. Instead, he folded his massive, armored arms over his chest, looking down at the young swordsman with a strange mixture of amusement and pity. "If I wanted you dead, lowborn, the very air in your lungs would already be poison. I did not lure you here to fight you. I brought you here to show you the truth that your precious teachers have been hiding from you." Soren kept his spear leveled at the demon's throat, his muscles tense. "Why should we trust a single word that comes out of your mouth? You are a monster. You are the enemy of everything living in the lower realm." "Because the real monsters are the ones you think are holy," Malakor snapped, his eyes flashing with a sudden, dangerous heat. He raised a massive hand, and a burst of violet fire erupted from his palm, shooting upward and illuminating a massive, hidden mural carved into the back wall of the ruin. "Look with your own eyes, Dao-Slayer." Kenji lowered his guard slightly, his eyes widening as he looked at the ancient carvings revealed by the demon's firelight. The mural did not depict a heroic battle between good and evil. It showed a group of radiant, multi eyed gods sitting around a grand table in the heavens. They were carving letters into a stone tablet, and Kenji could recognize the text instantly. It was the exact wording of the Dao-Slayer prophecy that Vaelen had recited to him three years ago. But below the text, the carving showed a mortal swordsman gathering glowing divine cores from fallen deities, his body acting as nothing more than a funnel that poured the refined energy back into a massive cosmic egg. "What is this?" Kenji breathed, stepping closer to the wall, his fingers trembling as he traced the stone lines. "This is the prophecy of my birth. Why are the gods the ones writing it?" "It is a script, boy," Malakor said, his voice turning grim and heavy. "The gods wrote it centuries ago. They are trapped by the laws of this aging universe, unable to grow or escape their own stagnation. They cannot bypass their own mortality, so they created you. They needed a mortal vessel of pure chaos to s*******r their physical forms. Every time you kill one, their energy is refined through your mortal body and sent back into the rebirth cycle. You are not freeing humanity, Kenji. You are the key to their cosmic resurrection." Kenji stared at his glowing right hand, his heart hammering against his ribs. The world seemed to spin around him as the foundation of his entire life crumbled into nothing. "No. That is impossible. Master Vaelen said I was chosen by the world. He said I was the answer to their tyranny." "Master Vaelen lied," Malakor interrupted cleanly. "He is using you just like the rest of them. You are a puppet dancing on golden strings." Before Kenji could process the staggering horror of the demon's words, the heavy stone doors of the ruin exploded inward, shattering into a thousand fragments that rained down across the chamber. A blinding, holy light flooded the dark room, completely cutting through the purple fog. The sound of hundreds of armored boots marching in perfect, terrifying unison echoed into the ruin. Through the settling smoke stepped Master Vaelen, his white blindfold pristine, flanked by a massive, golden-armored holy army of imperial elites. "I am deeply disappointed, Kenji," Vaelen said, his voice carrying a terrifying, divine weight that shook the very foundation of the temple. "I leave you alone for a single week, and I find you consorting with the filth of the underworld. Soldiers, cleanse this ruin. Leave no survivors."
