The Scarred Saviour

1088 Words
The ancient ruin dissolved into pure, screaming madness within seconds of the imperial army's arrival. Blinding holy light collided violently with waves of violet demonic fire, creating massive, concussive shockwaves that shattered the remaining obsidian pillars into flying shards of stone. Imperial soldiers clad in gleaming golden armor surged forward like a glittering, unstoppable tide, their heavy spears thrusting through the rising smoke. Malakor roared, a sound that shook the very foundation of the mountain, as his massive obsidian blade cut down three elites at a time. Nearby, Soren fought desperately, his face covered in soot as he used his iron spear to deflect a relentless barrage of holy arrows. "Kenji, move!" Soren screamed, his voice raw with panic, but the words were instantly swallowed by the deafening clash of steel and the roar of magical fire. Before Kenji could even take a step toward his friend, a massive explosion of divine energy ripped through the center of the chamber. The concussive blast caught him full in the chest, throwing him backward through the air. He crashed heavily against the stone floor, rolling through the dust and coughing violently as the ceiling began to cave in. The impact separated him from Soren and Malakor entirely, the falling debris creating a solid wall of rock that forced him down a narrow, collapsing side corridor. He stumbled through the choking haze, his vision blurring, only to find his path blocked by a dead end of solid mountain stone. When he spun around, his back pressed against the cold wall, six of Vaelen's elite guards stepped out of the thick smoke. Their golden shields were locked tight in a defensive wall, and their swords hummed with a cold, righteous power that made the air vibrate. "Yield, heretic," the lead guard ordered, his voice echoing coldly behind his golden visor as he raised his blade. "There is no escape from the light of the heavens." Kenji gripped his iron sword with both hands, but his mind was still reeling from the devastating horror of Malakor's words. His muscles shook, and the divine heat in his veins flared up unevenly, threatening to tear his arms apart from the inside. He spat a mouthful of blood onto the floor and glared at the advancing line. "Get out of my way." The guards charged in perfect, lethal unison, their heavy boots thudding against the stone. Kenji raised his blade to parry the first strike, but three more swords were already driving toward his throat and chest from different angles. He was entirely outmatched, pinned against the crumbling stone wall with nowhere to dodge and no room to swing. Suddenly, a blur of dark fabric dropped from the cracked ceiling directly into the middle of the imperial guards. A sleek, silver sword cut through the air, moving with blinding, fluid speed. The newcomer swept incredibly low, slicing cleanly through the lead guard's unarmored knee joints before spinning into a brutal, upward arc that shattered the heavy chest piece of the second soldier. Kenji froze in absolute shock, his breath catching in his throat. The stranger’s movements were not just fast; they were identical to his own. The precise weight shift, the savage angle of the wrist, the specific way the blade was dragged to maximize the tearing of flesh it was the exact signature sword style Master Vaelen had spent three agonizing years beating into him. It was a style meant for a single person. "Who are you?" Kenji gasped, his eyes wide as he watched the unfolding s*******r. The warrior did not answer. She was a slender woman clad in tight, dark leather armor, a deep hood pulled low over her face to obscure her features. With a fluid, lethal grace, she danced through the remaining elites like a shadow in the night. She executed a perfect reverse grip s***h, a highly specific technique Kenji had invented himself just six months ago in the isolation of the mountains to counter heavy imperial shields. Within ten heartbeats, all six golden-armored elites lay silent and bleeding on the stone floor. She snapped her blade clean of blood with a sharp flick of her wrist and turned toward him. Her eyes, visible beneath the dark shadow of her hood, were a piercing, familiar dark gray that sent a cold shiver down Kenji's spine. "If you want to live, shut your mouth and take my hand," she said. Her voice was sharp, urgent, and carried an eerie, ringing resonance that made his chest tighten with an inexplicable sense of dread. "Soren is still out there! I am not leaving him behind to die!" Kenji yelled, trying to push past her toward the main chamber where the sounds of battle were still echoing. "Soren will survive this, but you will not if Vaelen catches you," she snapped, stepping directly into his path. Before he could react, she reached out and grabbed Kenji’s right wrist with a grip that felt like solid iron. Kenji winced, trying to pull his arm away, but her hold was unbreakable. She raised her left hand, slicing her silver sword through the empty air in front of them with a strange, twisting motion. The very fabric of space fractured like breaking glass, tearing open a swirling, purple spatial rift that hummed with a terrifying, cosmic energy that smelled of ozone and starlight. "Move!" she ordered, dragging him forward toward the unstable tear in reality. Kenji stumbled forward, his boots dragging on the stone as he was forced to follow her. As she pulled him closer to the rift, her left sleeve pulled back several inches, exposing her forearm to the dim, flickering light of the burning corridor. Kenji’s heart stopped, and the breath left his lungs completely. He forgot how to walk, his feet freezing in place as he stared at her skin. Marked into her flesh was a jagged, crescent-shaped scar. It was not just any wound. It was the exact same mark Kenji had received from a mercenary blade during his very first battle in the burning temple three years ago, right down to the tiny, uneven notch at the bottom where the blade had caught on his bone. It was an impossible, identical match to the scar currently hiding beneath his own sleeve. As the purple rift violently swallowed them whole and the burning ruin vanished into nothingness behind them, Kenji could only stare at her arm in silent, suffocating horror, completely lost in a sea of questions he was terrified to answer.
