The Confession On Page 27

701 Words
The breakfast was silent, but the silence wasn't comfortable. It was thick with unspoken words and unresolved tension. Armani ate with an almost frightening normalcy, her eyes flicking up to Summer every few seconds with a possessive, hungry look. Summer picked at her food, the bacon suddenly tasting like ash. The incident in the kitchen, followed by Armani's quick apology and kiss, had thrown a wrench into her fragile peace. She felt like she was trapped in a play, and she had just missed her cue. When they were finished, Summer moved with a detached efficiency, clearing their plates and rinsing them in the sink. The clock on the wall was her only focus. It was time for her to go to work. The thought of getting out of the house, of being somewhere that wasn't saturated with the memory of the night and the sickening dread of the morning, felt like a lifeline. She went to her room to get changed, the air feeling heavy with Armani's presence. As she pulled on her work clothes, Armani appeared in the doorway, watching her. There was no casualness to her stance; it was a hungry, scrutinizing gaze. Summer turned to face her, managing a small, fake smile. "I have to go," Summer said, her voice thin. Armani's expression softened instantly. The mask of a possessive lover fell away, replaced by the familiar, vulnerable girl Summer had fallen for. "I know," she said, her voice a soft, low murmur. She walked up to Summer and wrapped her arms around her, pulling her into a tight hug. It was possessive, but also desperate, as if she were trying to physically merge them. "I'll miss you. Call me when you get a chance." Summer returned the hug, her arms feeling stiff. "I will," she said. "I'll miss you, too." She pulled away, grabbed her bag, and walked to the front door. "I'll be back around 5," she said, before stepping outside. "Be safe," Armani called from the doorway, the words a gentle reminder of the very real danger Summer was running from. The moment the door clicked shut, Summer let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding. She was free. Inside, the silence in the house was different. It wasn't the peaceful quiet of a sleeping home; it was a predatory stillness. Armani stood at the door for a moment, listening to the sound of Summer's footsteps fading. She watched through the window as Summer got in her car and drove away. There was a small, crudely handwritten note taped to the inside of the door: "Gone to work. Be back at 5." Armani smiled, a cold, empty look in her eyes. It was a detail Summer would have thought was kind. Armani saw it as a set of instructions. Armani moved through the house with a quiet purpose, a ghost in Summer's sanctuary. She went to Summer's room, her smile widening as she looked at all of Summer's belongings. She ran her hands along the spines of books, picked up a family photo, and sniffed a discarded shirt. Her fingers finally found a small, leather-bound journal tucked under a pile of art supplies. Summer's private thoughts, her secrets, were all there. Armani opened it to a random page, her eyes scanning the familiar handwriting. She flipped through the pages, her smile unwavering, until she reached a page that made her stop. Her breathing hitched, a low, guttural gasp escaping her lips. The smile on her face slowly dissolved, replaced by a vacant, manic stare. The words on the page were a confession, a truth that Summer had never told her, a secret that shattered the fragile reality Armani had built. And in that moment, she broke. The quiet, obsessive girl Summer had known was gone, replaced by a new, terrifying version of Armani, something entirely different. She closed the journal, her hands trembling, and walked to the front door just as she heard the sound of keys jingling in the lock. Summer's parents were home. Armani froze, a look of pure panic on her face as she hurried to the door and shut it completely just as her parents turned the knob.
