CHAPTER FIVE — The Real Heiress Exists

1088 Words
The Ashford mansion had always been a place of silence wrapped in luxury. But tonight, the silence felt different. Not peaceful. Alert. Like the entire house was holding its breath. In the grand dining hall, silverware was untouched. Crystal glasses sat half-filled. The long table usually filled with conversations about business empires and political influence was strangely quiet. Whispers had already spread. Small. Controlled. Dangerous. A missing heir. A rumor that should not exist. And yet… it refused to die. 🌙 SERAPHINA Seraphina Ashford sat at the head of the table. Perfect posture. Perfect expression. Perfect control. She lifted her teacup gracefully, taking a slow sip as if nothing in the world could disturb her peace. But inside… Something was off. Her father was speaking to a senior family advisor at the far end of the table. Their voices were low, careful. Seraphina didn’t look like she was listening. But she was. Every word. “Unverified reports…” “…a girl matching partial Ashford traits…” “…possible breach in old records…” Her fingers tightened slightly around the cup. But her face remained calm. Elegant. Untouched. That was how she survived in this house. Not by fear. But by perfection. Still… Tonight, the air felt heavier than usual. Her younger cousin leaned closer and whispered, “Have you heard anything?” Seraphina turned slightly, smiling softly. “People always talk,” she said gently. But her eyes didn’t smile. Across the room, her father finally raised his hand. Silence fell instantly. “Enough,” he said firmly. The room froze. “There are no missing heirs,” he declared. “There is no discussion.” And just like that… The conversation ended. But not the tension. Seraphina lowered her gaze slightly, sipping her tea again. Yet her reflection in the cup… didn’t look as calm as she pretended. BACK TO LILA Far away from gold walls and crystal chandeliers, Lila sat on the edge of the bed in Daniel’s secure location. But she wasn’t resting. She hadn’t moved much since the bracelet. Since the words. Switched at birth. Her fingers pressed into her palms tightly. “This is ridiculous,” she whispered to herself. “This is all ridiculous.” But her voice lacked conviction now. Because the flashes wouldn’t stop. The mansion. The voices. The name calling her something else. Her head throbbed slightly. “I don’t want this,” she said louder. “I don’t want any of it!” The door opened. Daniel entered. He didn’t speak immediately. He studied her first. Then stepped inside and closed the door behind him. “You’re shaking,” he said. “I’m fine,” she snapped instantly. He didn’t react. He placed a small file on the table. Lila looked at it suspiciously. “What is that?” “Answers,” Daniel said simply. Her breath caught slightly. He opened it. Pages. Reports. Images. Encrypted data. Lila stood slowly, her heart pounding harder. “You went behind my back again?” “I did what was necessary,” he replied. She stepped closer. “I didn’t ask for this!” Daniel finally looked at her directly. “No,” he said. “But you were chosen for it anyway.” Silence. Heavy. Then he turned the file toward her. “Read.” THE FILE Lila hesitated. Then slowly sat down and looked at the first page. Her eyes scanned quickly. Then slowed. Then stopped. Her breath caught. DNA partial match: Ashford lineage confirmed (72.8%) Her fingers tightened on the paper. “No…” she whispered. She turned the page. More data. More proof. Hospital records. Birth timing inconsistencies. Missing documentation. Altered identity logs. Her heart began to race uncontrollably. “This can’t be real…” she whispered. Daniel stood silently beside her. “It is,” he said. She looked up at him sharply. “You just believe everything in a file?!” “No,” he replied. “I believe patterns. And this pattern is too clean to be accidental.” Lila’s voice cracked. “So what… I’m just supposed to accept I belong to some rich family I never knew?!” Daniel stepped closer slightly. “That’s not what I said.” She stood abruptly. “I don’t care about Ashford! I don’t care about money or power or any of this!” Her voice broke slightly. “I just want my life back!” Silence followed. Then Daniel spoke quietly. “You never had a normal life to begin with.” That hit her harder than expected. She looked away. Anger fading into something more fragile. Confusion. Fear. Loss. “I don’t want to be special,” she whispered. “I don’t want any of this attention…” Daniel’s voice softened slightly. “You don’t get that choice anymore.” She turned sharply. “Why?!” His eyes hardened again. “Because they already found you once.” Silence. A long one. The weight of that sentence settled in the room like iron. Lila’s voice lowered. “Who is ‘they’?” Daniel didn’t answer immediately. Then “They’re the ones who erased you.” FAR AWAY — UNKNOWN LOCATION A dim underground archive. Rows of sealed cabinets. Security clearance scanners. A man in a black suit stepped forward and inserted a keycard. LEVEL: CLASSIFIED — ASHFORD DYNASTY The system beeped. Access granted. He opened a hidden digital file. The screen flickered. Then loaded. A single title appeared: FILE: “SECOND HEIRESS” STATUS: LOADING… The man paused. Then clicked. The file opened fully. A photo placeholder appeared. A red stamp flashed across the screen: SECOND HEIRESS – STATUS: ALIVE The man froze. Then quickly whispered into a secured device: “She’s active.” A voice responded instantly: “Confirm identity breach?” He swallowed. “Yes.” A pause. Then the voice replied coldly: “Begin retrieval protocol.” BACK TO LILA Lila stared at Daniel, her breathing uneven. “I’m not your weapon,” she whispered. Daniel’s expression didn’t change. “I never said you were.” Another pause. Then his voice dropped lower. “But you are their target now.” Lila’s chest tightened. “What happens now?” Daniel looked toward the window. Dark outside. Still. But not safe. “Now,” he said quietly. “They stop hiding.” A distant sound echoed outside. Not thunder. Not wind. Engines. Multiple. Approaching fast. Daniel turned slightly toward the door. His voice sharpened instantly. “Get behind me.” Lila froze.
