Saturday arrived, giving Selene a bright start to her morning with coffee and pancakes. It was the start of her two days off, and yet her phone had been buzzing non-stop since 9 a.m. Zara, her best friend since college, had been relentless all week. Badgering her to come out and be a real human being for once. With Malik hovering like a shadow, judging and questioning her every other day and her own self-imposed hermitage, Selene couldn't deny that she had been living like a ghost herself. "I swear to god if you ghost me again," Zara had texted with about twenty eye-roll emojis, "I'm staging a damn intervention." So Selene relented. Malik was already on her ass, she didn't need Zara pestering her as well. By noon, she found herself being dragged through the mall like a reluctant toddler, a Starbucks cold brew clutched in one hand while Zara held her wrist like a lifeline. "Temptation," Zara said with a sly grin as they passed another boutique. "That's the name of the club. My coworker says the vibes are chef's kiss. And the people? Mm," she licked her lips with a dramatic flare of sexuality. Selene quirked a brow. "Temptation? Sounds like it was named by a horny middle-aged woman." "Oh come on, don't be a snob. You need this. I need this. We both need this," Zara begged. They weaved through racks of clothing. Zara plucked garments like a stylist on a mission: sparkly crop tops, high-waisted leather pants, mesh bodysuits, strappy heels that looked like they could break ankles on contact. At Victoria's Secret, the chaos peaked. "Tell me why this exists," Selene said flatly as Zara held up a diamond-encrusted red thong that looked more like a necklace. "Because," Zara said with a smirk, "your ass would look delectable in it." Selene laughed and tossed the pair of panties at her friend's head, which Zara expertly caught and tossed right back. They continued bouncing from store to store until Zara gasped with glee and pulled Selene into a boutique that looked like it catered to the sexy and the brave. She held up a sparkly black dress with spaghetti straps and a slit. "Try. This. On." Selene eyed it with skepticism. "It's definitely... something." "It's daring, is what it is," Zara countered, thrusting the hanger at her. "You need to remember you're f*****g hot. Seriously, you've got the body for this dress, babe." Inside the fitting room, Selene slipped into the dress. The fabric clung to her curves like a glove. The slit revealed just enough thigh, and the neckline... well, Zara was definitely right—she would turn heads. When she stepped out, Zara let out a shriek. "Yes! Yesss, ma'am! That is the dress. We are officially back in the game." Later that evening at her house, Selene stood in front of her mirror, transfixed by the stranger in the glass. Her hair was pinned back on one side, cascading in loose curls down the other. Her lips were painted a deep plum, her eyeliner sharp enough to stab a man. The black dress hugged every curve, showing her who she used to be before grief took over her life. Zara burst in, dressed in a blood red bodycon dress that shimmered in the light. "Oh. My. God. Look at us." Selene gave her a once-over. "We clean up well." Zara grinned. "We look like two sexy bitches, and I'm so here for it." Just then, the sound of Malik's car pulling into the driveway broke the moment. The engine rumbled like a warning. A moment later, his heavy footsteps echoed through the old house. As the girls descended the stairs, Malik stood by the base, arms folded, brows arched. "You two heading out?" he asked, eyes zeroing in on Zara's plunging neckline before flicking to Selene's dangerously high slit. Zara smirked. "What's it to you? Jealous? " Malik narrowed his eyes but didn't reply, not in the mood for Zara's bullshit. His gaze settled on Selene, his sister, in a dress that looked more like a shirt on her body. He crossed his arms tighter. "You're going out dressed like that?" Selene didn't flinch. "Yes. Isn't this what you wanted me to do? I'm going out, and having fun." "You look like—" he started. "Say 'a slut' and I swear I'll throw this heel at your head," Zara interjected sweetly. Malik sighed. "I just don't want anything to happen to you." Selene softened for half a second. "Nothing will. I'm not twelve. You can relax." He opened his mouth to argue, but Selene grabbed Zara's hand and slipped past him. "Let's go." "Be safe," Malik called after them, but the front door had already swung shut. Outside, the air was humid and hot. The girls slid into Zara's car, as they heard the bass from the club audible blocks away. As they approached Temptation, it loomed like a den of sin and magic. Neon red lights glowed from the sign above: a devil's tail curled into the last letter. The line outside was long, filled with men and women in glittering, skin-baring outfits and cologne that clung to the air. Zara handed off their IDs to the bouncer, who gave them both a once-over before grinning and nodding them in. "Ladies. Enjoy the temptation." Inside, the music was a pulse, a heartbeat of desire and freedom. Bodies moved like smoke—fluid and intoxicating. Selene blinked as lights flickered overhead, casting everything in a surreal glow. Zara grabbed her hand, pulling her toward the bar. "Shots first!" Zara shouted over the music. Selene hesitated but followed. "Just one." "One for now." After downing tequila with lime, the burn awakening something dormant in her chest, Selene let the music take over. She danced with Zara for what felt like hours, her dress riding up dangerously high, her mind floating in a haze of sound and movement. She felt powerful. Seen. Alive. But then she felt it—that shift. A presence. Eyes. She turned toward the far edge of the room, near the shadowed VIP booths. There he was. The stranger with emerald eyes—Lucas. Leaning against the wall, watching her. Selene's breath caught. He didn't approach. Didn't smile. Just stared, like he was trying to read the marrow of her bones. The crowd closed in between them, and when she blinked, he was gone. Zara bumped her hip playfully. "You okay?" Selene nodded slowly. "Yeah... just thought I saw someone." Zara raised a brow. "Hot someone?" "Possibly... vampire someone," Selene muttered. Zara laughed, oblivious. "Girl, you need another shot." Selene chuckled, trying to shake the chill crawling down her spine. "Yeah. Maybe I do." But in the back of her mind, Lucas's stare lingered like a brand. Temptation, it seemed, was more than just the name of the club. It was a warning. And she was already under its spell.
