One sharp inhale after another rippled through the room, before everyone present felt the need to weigh in on my decision.
"Is Nicola kidding?"
"Everyone knows she's head over heels for Pete, completely wrapped around his finger. She used to hate the idea of being a housewife more than anything, but she put her whole career on hold just to stay home and take care of his sensitive stomach. There's no way she means this."
"She's just blowing off steam, that's all."
"Nicola, you're almost thirty... why are you picking fights with some young girl? This is all just a performance for the crowd, nothing real."
None of our friends believed a single word I'd said. Even Pete looked at me with that lazy, mocking glint in his eyes.
I let out a quiet sigh.
I really had been so pathetic and eager to please in this relationship for so long, hadn't I?
So long that everyone had forgotten who I used to be.
Back then, when I said something, I meant it. No takebacks, no compromises.
"Pete," I said, smiling with a cold, empty smile that never reached my eyes. "I'm twenty-eight. Of course, I can't compete with those fresh young things in your eyes."
The corner of his mouth tugged upward in a sharp, sneering smirk.
That smirk was clearly a goad, he wanted me to blow up, to act like some hysterical, lovesick mess.
In the two weeks I'd been gone, he hadn't bothered to text or call me even once. But he'd still found time to post on i********:, filling his story and feed with shots of him moping around the empty house, playing the lonely victim.
Thinking about all the furious comments dragging me under the bus on those posts, I almost laughed out loud.
Of course, men always stick up for other men, don't they?
My smile stretched wider, bright, sharp, and unapologetic. "Relax. I'll do just fine without you. And for the record, mature women don't lose value as we age... we gain s*x appeal. Do you even know what that is?"
I tilted my head. "Women are like fine wine. The longer you keep them, the deeper, richer, and more satisfying they become. But men like you? You're basically past your expiration date the second you hit twenty-five."
I leaned in closer, a playful, cruel glint in my eyes. "Let me let you in on a little secret. Every single o****m I've had these last few years? All fake. I'm done acting for you. Go find some other girl to put on your little show."
I tossed him a scathing, dismissive smirk as he stared back at me, stunned and completely frozen.
I pushed my chair back, stood up, and walked straight out of the private room without a single backward glance.
